Bola Tinubu, the former governor of Lagos State, won the party’s nomination for president in 2023, according to Buhari, because delegates were free to choose their preferred candidate.

In response to a question about why he didn’t support any presidential candidate, Buhari stated that he was given a list of 30 candidates to choose from during the lead-up to the party’s primary. The majority of the candidates on the list, he continued, were members of his cabinet and state governors.

According to Buhari, the vice president, who was also running for the position of the ruling party’s flag bearer, would be impacted if one of the candidates was chosen from the list.
Speaking in Hausa, the president added, “I was given a list of thirty applicants to choose from.” My ministers and governors made up the majority of them. Which candidate will I select or not? Even one of the governors stopped by to speak with me and inquired about our decision.
My Vice President, who was listening to our chat, would be impacted if I did that. They can now select anybody they want, I said. They chose Tinubu to represent the APC in the presidential election.
