Determined to stem the tide of ecological challenges bedeviling the State ecosystems, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Mfon Bassey has carried out evaluation of flood-prone areas at Bayside Community and assured residents of government’s commitment towards addressing the issues.
Speaking to residents while on inspection, the Commissioner said the government was ready to address the ecological issues, as identified by his visit, to ascertain the root cause and proffer possible solutions.
His words: “the government of Sir Ben Ayade is committed to ensuring that the effects of climate change and other man-made activities that impact negatively on our environment are reduced, if not completely eradicated.”
Hon. Mfon advised the community to desist from activities such as indiscriminate dumping of waste in gutters and water channels, capable of defacing the environment, while assuring them of prompt government intervention through desilting and evacuation of blocked drainages to forestall future flooding in the area.
Furthermore, the Commissioner frowned at the rate of open defecations in the area and identified sites for the construction of public toilet facilities in order to stop the hazardous practice, promote hygiene and environmental health to avoid outbreak of diseases.
In another development, the Commissioner interfaced with managements of Post Office, African Club, Etim Edem Park and Cultural Centre/NEPA loading bays to dialogue with them on the need to stop loading within these routes and appealed to them to always load at the Etim Edem Park so as to avoid congestion and traffic violations on the highways.
He maintained that notices would be sent to commercial drivers to have waste baskets in their vehicles and also cautioned passengers against indiscriminate dumping of waste along the roads as defaulters would be prosecuted, adding that enforcement teams had been constituted to ensure adherence to the Cross River State Environmental Laws.
