“Bauchi Is Ranked 8th Most Poor State in Nigeria,” Says Governor

Bauchi has been rated and ranked number 8 on the top list of poorest states in Nigeria. Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State said this in a Town Hall Meeting with the Senate Committee on  the theme of ‘Poverty Alleviation and Social Investment Programmes’.

The Governor, who was well represented by Alhaji Baba Tela, said that the high rate of poverty in the state is as a result of the rampaging Boko Haram insurgency happening presently in the state.

“The rate of poverty and social inequalities is sustained by the ongoing conflict with the Boko Haram and the effect of migration in the Northeast which has greatly overstretched our limited resources.”

According to him, the data has shown that Bauchi is the eighth poorest state in Nigeria and that 83 million citizens of Nigeria are living even below the standard of poverty.

Therefore, the essence of the meeting was to charge everyone up in order to help fight against this poverty not only in Bauchi but all over the states in Nigeria.

“It is now left to all of us to rise up to this challenge, by taking decisive measures to revise this alarming trend,” he commented.

The meeting, according to him, was organised by the state government in collaboration with senate committee and Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in order to deliberate and provide suggestions on how to minimize and subjugate the rate at which poverty is taking solid ground in the state.

He also added that the essence of the meeting was to provide directions on how the different programmes set-up for the people can be of great use and advantage to the state.

He furthered said that the government was already planning of planting development in the state and among the people. They were making effort to align with foreign partners to better augment the living condition of both young and old in the state.

As a result of the concern and efforts pushed towards improving the living condition and welfare of the people, the government is planning of equipping the youths and women with different initiative programmes in the state.

“It is my conviction that youth and women who are the backbone of any meaningful development in the society are well taken care of.

“It is in line with this that the government is creating an enabling environment to better the lives of our citizens, through skills acquisition programmes in the state,” he said.
