Betta Edu Commissions UNICAL Isolation Center, Promises The Center More Funding

“Prof Florence Banku Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, is my COVID-19 hero,” says Dr Betta Edu.

Prof Florence Banku Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, has successfully completed the establishment of an Ultra Modern Holding Bay/Isolation Center for the Institution as a special way to mark her 100 days in office. The ground breaking ceremony, which was conducted about three weeks ago by the dynamic Commissioner for Health, Dr Betta Edu, has yielded results, as the University of Calabar’s structural edifice for the Male and Female Holding Bay has been completed.

Prior to the center’s commissioning, Vice Chancellor Prof Florence Obi reaffirmed her commitment to safeguarding the lives of the students under her care. With the global pandemic and the return of students to campus, all precautionary measures must be placed in place to secure them. This is why the school has made significant investments in hand washing stations, infrared thermometers, and, most recently, the holding bay/isolation core.

The VC praised Sen Prof Ben Ayade’s help through his Health Commissioner, who not only provided COVId-19 preventive products but also came to inspect COVID preparedness ahead of full resumption a few weeks ago. “Let me express my appreciation, as well as that of the entire Senate, Management, and Students of this prestigious University, to His Excellency Sen Prof Ben Ayade for his unwavering support. Dr Betta Edu, I must say, is a round peg in a round hole, and I thank Sen Ben Ayade once more for always appointing meritocrats to lead such parastatals, as Dr Edu is one of them.

“Since the creation of the COVID-19 taskforce team and a courtesy visit to Dr. Edu, we’ve felt Ayade’s magic touch through her, and CRSG has been a big help to us. We’ll continue to work with the CRSG through the Ministry of Health to ensure that this Holding Bay is used wisely for the reason for which it was designed.

Before continuing to officially open the Holding Bay, Vice Chancellor Prof Florence Obi was congratulated by Dr Edu for smashing the glass ceiling and performing exceptionally well after her appointment as VC. “Prof Florence is one of those remarkable women who has accomplished so much in such a short period of time, and I must say that I am very proud of her and every other woman out there; her appointment as VC is indeed timely. This isolation center has supported Cross River State in raising its isolation bed space by 20, enabling the case management team to provide quality treatment for COVID-19.

Sen Prof Ben Ayade’s government will continue to fund the Isolation Center. More PPE, surgical gowns, oxygen cylinders and oxygen concentrators will be delivered, as well as cupboards, washing sinks, manpower from case management, capacity building, and other items that will be needed to operate this facility.

I am confident that parents and guardians can rest assured that their children are in good hands, based on this vision and Prof Florence’s dedication to ensuring that all COVID-19 protocols are strictly followed here. Finally, I’d like to express my gratitude to Dr. Akiba and his team for their outstanding efforts and accomplishments. I urge other institutions to follow in the footsteps of the University of Calabar in doing the right thing.”
