2 min

The cross River State born award winning creative writer, Kingsley Agbor CELEBRATES his birthday today, 6th April 2020. In his birthday message, he writes

It has become a norm in this country that any problem that arises, the root suffers it most. It hurts so much to know that we were not timely informed to shut down our various businesses and stay at home. Unfortunately, no proper arrangement for the comfort of the masses especially the poor was made. Right now many of us are not having it easy as we could not stock enough food items due to financial constraints and other circumstances.

The little we were able to stock are almost/already finished and our hope of having 3 square meals are dashed. You can imagine a friend of mine wrote on his Facebook timeline that “if I die in this shut down period, no need conducting an autopsy, just know I died of palm oil and yam”. Trust me, he meant it and guess he does not have any other food at home aside yam and oil.

We know vividly well that there are some of us who are so comfortable at their various homes; they have enough to eat, steady power and water supply, other things to make them happy and more comfortable such that if there were to be an extension of date, they would not have any reason to complain.

Those of us who are stuck in cities like Abuja and Lagos where every entry and exit are blocked are the worst hit because we can’t go home to our people, we cant go back to our various states including those of us who do not permanently reside there.

These cities have the highest cases of covid19 recorded so far and we the habitants are so scared to move out to at least buy food stuffs. Before the directives on total shut down were sent out, I believe some people at the helm of affairs knew about it and were able to plan ahead, prepare themselves and further take precautions without carrying the poor masses along.

Some of them I believe left for their various home towns/states before time while some of us are stuck here.

The deed has been done and obviously nobody is to be blamed because we quite understand that the federal Government is protecting us but I want to use this opportunity to appeal to our various constituency representative whose members are stuck in those cities to come to their aids, help them find their way home where it would be a lot easier for them.

while making arrangement for those outside the country to come back , also consider those of us who need to go back to their states. If you can speak to the federal government on their behalf to at least give them a day to go home, we will be so glad but where by it cant be possible, please consider the poor and assist us in any way possible which would aid our survival pending when this will be is over.
