Following series of complaints of Umunede people over the level of havoc being wrecked by herdsmen in Umunede in Ika North East L.G.A of Delta State, the community in a unanimous voice during an enlarged meeting with Umunede monarch and the herdsmen at the Obi’s Palace has given a two weeks ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen to vacate Umunede.
The verdict was passed during a meeting held on Saturday, February 22, 2020 at the Palace of the Umunede monarch, HRM Dr. Ezeagwu Ezenwali I (JP) which was also attended by the chairman of cattle rearers in Umunede, Mr. Isa.

Addressing the meeting, the Obi of Umunede condemned the criminal activities of herdsmen in the community, saying that a lot of pains have been inflicted on his people which according to him, is inimical to the peaceful coexistence of the herdsmen and the people of Umunede.

A committee comprising Chiefs and some elders of the community which was set up for an indoor meeting, after deliberating extensively on the menace of the herdsmen in the community, also taking to cognizance, the damage caused one Mr. Mokwuye Richard, whose yam barn was destroyed and had his yams eaten up by their cattle, reached the decision and had the verdict passed with prior permission from the monarch by Chief Amos Onyeagwu, to oust the herdsmen from the community before March 12 and also demanded them to pay Mr. Richard for damages.
According to Obi Ezeagwu, after the indoor meeting, the well being of his people remains his top most priority.

Speaking with Ika Weekly reporter shortly after the meeting, Mr. Richard Mokwunye while narrating his ordeal, said that on getting to his farm, he met his farm in shambles and his yams were eaten up by the herdsmen’s cattle.
In his words, “They destroyed what I laboured for in a year. This is the height of man’s inhumanity to man and it is unacceptable. They have to pay for it because it is with the proceeds of the farm produce that I can feed my family.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of Umunede Vigilante, Mr. James Akumazi said they were able to apprehend the herdsmen through a phone call tip, informing them that the herdsmen were at Oba farm road destroying people’s farm crops. He stated that together with his members, they were able to apprehend one of them who gave his name as Mohammed.
