BREAKING!! Fear Grip Nigerian Students As House of Reps Oppose School Resumption, Demand 3-Month Postponement
Despite the growing cases of COVID-19, students are now in fear after the House of Representatives blamed the Federal Government for giving schools the go-ahead to resume on Monday.
The House claimed that government officials did not consult the relevant National Assembly committees, contrary to their assertion that all relevant stakeholders were consulted prior to the resumption date of 18 January 2021.
It therefore requested that the resumption be postponed for three months if the requisite safety measures were not placed in place and protocol enforcement was poor.
In a telephone interview with our correspondent on Saturday, the Chairman of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services, Prof Julius Ihonvbere, revealed these facts.
They did not consult us; nobody from the ministry talked to me in my committee, at least. I was in Abuja. And I am not aware if any of my representatives have been talked to. They’re just not seeing us as important stakeholders,’ he said.
In a statement released in Abuja on Saturday, Ihonvbere, on behalf of his commission, opposed the date of Monday’s resumption.
The statement was titled “Resumption of school: Are we really prepared?” ”
It read, “The Federal Government’s decision to reopen schools on January 18, 2021 was met with concern by the Committee on Basic Education and Services, House of Representatives.
We are particularly worried that schools were closed when the infection rates hovered about 500 and below; but now that it hovers well over 1,000 infections per day, schools are being reopened. Without proper verifiable and sustainable arrangements to protect and safeguard our children, why are we rushing to reopen schools? ”
