C/River Primary Health Care DG Urges Against Discrimination Of Person’s Living With Leprosy and Other infectious Diseases —Health —Nigeria

The Director General, Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency ,Dr Janet Ekpenyong, has urged Cross Riverians to stop the discrimination against people living with Leprosy and other infectious diseases.

Dr Ekpenyong stated this in Ugep,Yakurr Local government area of Cross River State on the occasion of the 2020 world Leprosy Day with the theme “Leprosy, Not what You Think”.

Dr Ekpenyong disclosed that Leprosy like every other disease is not a death sentence as its been perceived as everyone is at risk of being infected.

“Leprosy is like every other disease that is curable,I know that over the years,there has been a lot of myth about the disease, please don’t allow those infected to live in isolation ,ensure you support them,which am sure you will from today,because you have come to realize that Leprosy is curable”.

She further tasked the royal fathers to ensure their subjects receive fair treatment and if need be an establishment of legislation to make it an offence for people living with Leprosy to be discriminated .

” Our royal fathers,please if there is need to set up a law to make it illegal to discriminate against people living with Leprosy, please do ensure to set it up,people should know that it is unfair to abandon people living with Leprosy, if you don’t care for them ,they can’t get better and we can’t stop the reoccurring cases of leprosy in our beloved state ,Our Dear Governor Senator Professor Ben Ayade, is putting in so much for the health care of our people ,through the renovation and equipping of our healthcare centres ,let’s compliment his effort”

The Commissioner for Health,Dr Betta Edu who opened the occasion ,disclosed that in 2019, 84 people were diagnosed with Leprosy ,with 8 cases recorded in Yakurr hence the choice for the lunch of the program in the area.

She however tasked them to sensitize the community on the need to have proper check on a regular basis to avoid complications which may lead to incurable circumstances.

Responding ,the Obol Opon of Ugep and Paramount ruler of Yakurr Obol ………. appreciated the team for the visit and the flag off in his kingdom,tracing the history to 1920 when the first case was recorded and since then consistent effort has helped in minimizing the spread of the disease through sensitization and treatment .

He assured them of regular sensitization in both Leprosy, Lassa fever and other infectious diseases.
