Representatives from southern and northern Kaduna have decided to split the current Kaduna state into two new states.
Representatives from the two major regions of Kaduna announced their decision at a constitutional review session at the state legislature in Kaduna on Wednesday.

Nasir el-Rufai, the state governor; Uba Sani, the senator representing Kaduna central; Kabiru Gaya, the senator representing Kano south; and other stakeholders attended the hearing.

Jonathan Askake, president of the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union (SOKAPU), said the people of southern Kaduna are requesting the creation of Gurara state from Kaduna during a hearing on a letter previously given to the constitution review committee.

Ashake proposed amending the constitution to allow for the creation of two extra geopolitical zones, with the envisaged Gurara state falling under the middle-belt west zone.

He remarked, “I’m here to elaborate on the memo filed before this August committee earlier, since August 7, 2020.”

“The topic of state creation was one of the themes we raised there. The people of southern Kaduna have been arguing for the creation of a state for over 30 years.

“Even with the report of the 2014 national confab, which advocated the creation of 18 states, including Gurara state for the people of southern Kaduna, it has proven tough.

“Section 8 of the constitution has gotten overly complicated, thus we hereby propose that this committee modifies the section to allow for the creation of the state of Gurara.

“Secondly, we propose reorganizing the current geopolitical system. There are six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, including southern Kaduna in the north-west zone.

“We want eight geopolitical arrangements, including Gurara state as part of the middle-belt west geopolitical zone if it is created.”

Abdulkadir Ahmed, head of the Kaduna Elders Initiative in northern Kaduna, defended the statement signed by senators, federal and state MPs from Kaduna north.

They demand the construction of a “new Kaduna state,” which will comprise the “Kaduna north and central senatorial zones,” as well as Gurara state, according to Ahmed.

“We are campaigning for the construction of a new Kaduna state from the current Kaduna state, and we want the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s constitution altered to allow this,” he stated.

“Kaduna south has been complaining about marginalization since then, despite the fact that they have been allocated chiefdoms and account for 60% of Kaduna state’s workforce.

“Let the state be divided, and if they want Gurara state, give it to them.”

“On our part, we are requesting the creation of a new Kaduna state, which will encompass the senatorial zones of Kaduna North and Kaduna Central.

“However, each area of the state should hold a referendum to decide where it wishes to belong.”
