BREAKING!! Owerri On Fire As Hoodlums Set Imo Police Headquarters Ablaze, Free Prisoners (Video)

On Sunday night, hoodlums set fire to the Imo Police Headquarters and released prisoners.

According to Weetalknaija.com.ng, unidentified attackers set fire to a correctional facility and police investigations department in Owerri, Imo State Capital, in an overnight operation on Monday, April 5.

Witnesses said the attackers attacked the prison and police department shortly after midnight, freeing an unconfirmed number of inmates and suspects, according to posts on social media. Strong gunfire rang out in the city, with one source suggesting that hundreds of inmates had fled.

Weetalknaija.com.ng has no way of knowing how many inmates fled, but Amnesty International reported over the weekend that the Owerri Correctional Centre had 2,156 inmates, compared to its capacity of 548.

The extent of the damage and the number of casualties were not immediately clear, but images posted on Twitter showed heavy smoke billowing from what posters said were the scenes of the assault, which lasted more than two hours.

Meanwhile, Imo police spokesman Godson Orlando told Peoples Gazette that he was unaware of the violence, hours after reports of heavy gunshots and explosions spread through social media, with residents in various parts of Owerri reporting hearing them.

Mr Orlando, a police superintendent, told The Gazette by phone at 4:48 a.m., “I am just hearing it from you now.” “I’ll have to wait until later today to find out what happened,” says the narrator.
