BREAKING!! Reactions As Nigerian Govt Asks All Phone Users To Submit Phones’ IMEI Numbers To Isa Pantami, Communication Minister

Reactions to the Nigerian government’s request that all phone users submit their IMEI numbers to Communication Minister, Isa Pantami.

Many people believe the Nigerian government is seeking to deprive them of their privacy for nefarious reasons.

Nigerians have pledged not to give the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) their mobile phone’s International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) if Isa Pantami remains the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy.

Many Nigerians expressed defiance after hearing on Friday morning that the NCC would require Nigerians to give the IMEI of their phones to the commission starting in July.

In the commission’s Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Card Registration, the regulatory body declared this.

According to Punch, this is part of NCC’s plan to begin implementing the Device Management System (a Centralised Equipment Identity Register), which is backed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Accordingly, His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has commanded that the Device Management System be implemented within three months,” according to a section of the policy.

“With the goal of curtailing the counterfeit mobile phone market, discouraging mobile phone theft, enhancing National Security, protecting consumer interests, increasing revenue generation for the government, reducing the rate of kidnapping, mitigating the use of stolen phones for crime, and facilitating blocking or tracing of stolen mobile phones and other smart devices, one of the means to achieve this is to facilitate blocking or tracing of stolen mobile phones and other smart devices,” according to the NCC.

“The development of a Centralised Equipment Identity Register, also known as a Device Management System, will act as a repository for all registered mobile phones’ International Mobile Equipment Identity and their owners.

“IMEIs that have been reported as stolen or illegal will be shared with all operators and service providers through the DMS.”

The approach, however, has drawn widespread condemnation, with many Nigerians believing that the Buhari administration, with the help of Pantami, who has publicly voiced sympathy for terrorist groups, is up to something nefarious against the people, particularly in the south.

While some people said they would rather relocate to neighboring nations than disclose their IMEI, while others said the Nigerian government was trying to take away their privacy.

“We did NIN (National Identification Number), BVN (Bank Verification Number), and now they want us to drop our phone’s IMEI number,” Elder Seun (@iamseunalaofin) tweeted. They’ll soon advise us to hang Buhari’s photo in our houses for some purpose we don’t yet understand. Anyone who still believes in this government needs Bigi Apple to reawaken their senses!”

Another Reaction;

“NCC says Nigerians must disclose their phone IMEI from July, and it’s mandatory,” NEFERTITI (@firstladyship) tweeted. ‘They will advance to Phase 2 by 2022,’ Obadiah Mailafia has previously stated. They can trace your whereabouts using the IMEI of your phone. And your NIN-SIM Registration information is accessible to Isa Pantami.”

Another Reaction;

“I haven’t linked my NIN, and I have no intention of submitting my IMEI to the NCC or Isa Pantami. Elvis Tunde (@Tundekvng) stated, “Patapata, I will relocate to Togo.”

“It appears that the Nigerian government’s goal is to deprive its inhabitants of all privacy,” remarked Duke of Ibadan (@ AsiwajuLerry). “We went from linking NIN to SIM cards to now having to submit the IMEI of our phone?” I’ve made one error in linking my NIN, and I’m not going to do it again.”

“I would rather go through the horrible wilderness of Niger Republic, the dry scorching and deadly deserts of Libya and serve as a slave for two years before crossing over to Europe to conduct prostitution than give Isa Pantami my IMEI number,” $Hydra (@TheBriDen) says.

“Do you want to submit your IMEI number?” These individuals want to start following us around. They would smash your door if you dey your house like this. Mayowa Olagunju (@iam doctormayor) responded, “I don’t think I can do it.”

“Isa Pantami and the rest of the APC cult wanted your IMEI number. Tears of ecstasy stream down his cheeks. May you not make the same irreversible error with the Buhari administration,” tweeted Ayemojubar (@ayemjubar).

“Look at how quickly the notorious bigot (Buhari) accepts all these inane policies yet takes time to resolve simple issues,” Oladimeji (@Dimejisayso) tweeted. There’s something shady going on.”

“The idea is from Pantami, I am sure,” M. O. Olanrewaju (@OlawaleMLanre) asserted. I conducted a feasibility study to see how many people in the North had registered (connected) their NIN/SIM; 45 percent have not. The policy is in the South’s favor. They instantly realized the significance of IMEI, which surprised them at first.”
