Story Written By George Odok, Calabar
A 26 year-old mother, Ms Patience Effiong-Udo, has told journalists in Calabar how a prophetess in her church convinced her to sell her 9 year-old daughter accused of witchcraft.
Effiong-Udo, narrated the incident at the Headquarters of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Calabar when she was been paraded for Child Trafficking.
She said that her daughter has been staying with the prophetess for over a year and when she visited the prohetess to beg for food to eat, the prohetess had to convince her to sell her daughter that she is a witch.
According to Patience, someone linked her up to Bogobiri area in Calabar where she was told she can sell the child.
“My daughter has been staying with the prophetess who is incharge of Mount Zion Light church in Itu Okon in Calabar Municipality for over a year now.
“I am a single mother who has no food at home to eat. When I went to the prohetess house to beg her for food, she rather adviced me to sell my 9 year-old daughter that she is a witch.
“It was at the point of looking for a buyer at Bogobiri that the Civil Defence people came and arrested me,” she confessed.
The State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr Danjuma Elisha, said they were alerted by a concerned Nigerian who called them that Patience was looking for a buyer to sell her daughter.
“Upon a tip-off by a good Nigerian on Aug. 18 2020, our men arrested one Ms. Patience Effiong-Udo who went to Bogobiri in Calabar South allegedly looking for a buyer for one of her daughters.
“Upon investigation, she confessed to the crime and alleged that the prohetess in her church told her that her child was a witch and that she should not stay in her church anymore.
“While she was asking question on how to sell the child, the person decided to inform us and we swiftly swung into action and picked her.
“In line with inter-agency synergy, we shall be handing over Ms. Effiong-Udo to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other Related Matters for further investigation and prosecution,” he said.
