C/River North Senatorial Election: Top Contender Aims For Representative Transformation

A top contender in the expected election to occupy the vacant senatorial seat for Cross River North Senatorial District, Rt Hon Ogana Lukpata said his aim is for representative transformation if voted into the Senate.

Contained in series of campaign principles and philosophy that he encapsulated to form the central pursuit when he makes it to the Senate and sent to Daily Mail, Lukpata said, as a tested hand, he would not only bring legislative transformation into the district but impact lives of the constituents.

The former National Legal Adviser to the Social Democratic Party, SDP, believes that the unique position of the district requires unique approach which includes inclusive governance, deepening of legislations, special cultivisation of representatives-constituents relationship and realistic approach to the needs of the district.

Lukpata who served as a Member of the Governing Board of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, said he is experienced in the legislative nuances and possessed the required negotiating skills required for a senator in the 21st century especially in Cross River North.

“His desire to serve, his love for his people, his experience in the process, and his law making charisma set him apart,” a member of his campaign team told Daily Mail.

“He will make a good senator for our people. He is recognised and respected. He is not a baby politician. He won’t use public funds for his campaign. He doesn’t have access to it like some people.

“He knows what the senatorial district needs. The plight of the people and the need to deepen legislative process to come to bear on the people are things he has promised to see to their happening.
“The constituency projects would be 100% people’s own – they would be involved and see that what’s voted for would be used for the benefit of the district,” he said.

Daily Mail reports that various aspirants are warming up for the primary election in different political parties to occupy the vacant seat which was occupied by Rose Oko until her death few months ago in the UK.

The entry of Lukpata on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has tilt the balance of power in his direction, party members have said.
Some believe he possesses what is needed to win the election for the PDP.
Lukpata holds a Doctoral Degree in International Relations and Strategic Studies of the University of Jos, according to his biography sent to Daily Mail.

It said he also possesses the Master’s Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy, the Bachelor of Laws and the Bachelor of Divinity. He was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1987 and has a professional Postgraduate Diploma in Legislative Drafting of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Lagos.

He was elected National Legal Adviser to the Social Democratic Party at the Party’s National Convention held in Abuja on July 25,1990. As National Legal Adviser, he doubled as Sole Administrator of the Party in Borno and Yobe states simultaneously.

Due to the successes recorded in the two states, he was further deployed to assist in restructuring and strengthen the Party in Akwa Ibom State in 1992, an assignment he accomplished in three months.

He served as a Member of the Governing Board of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital from 2000-2004 under the Obasanjo led Federal Government of Nigeria.

He was elected two times by the good people of Ukele to represent Yala 11 state constituency in the Cross River State House of Assembly from 2011-2019, the 7th and 8th Assemblies of the nation’s 4th Republic.

In the 7th Assembly, he was Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary, Public Service, Human Rights, Ethics and Privileges.

He was a Principal Officer in the 8th Assembly and also had the honour of being elected two times as Speaker Pro Tempore. Presently, he is Special Adviser Legal, Office of the Governor.
He has been exposed to legal practice both at the official and private bar, it further said.

At the official bar, his biography said he retired from the civil service of Cross River State in 2006 as Deputy Director (state counsel).

In that capacity, it said he served as Head, Department of Public Prosecutions; Head, Department of the Administrator General and Public Trustee; Head, Department of Legal Drafting; Head Zonal Office, Ogoja and Head, Zonal Office, Ikom.

At the private bar, he practiced as pupil counsel, O.O.Ede & co, Lagos; Associate counsel, Liberation Chambers, Calabar; Managing counsel, Efiok Cobham & Associates, Calabar and Principal Counsel, Ogana Lukpata & Co., Calabar.

It further attested that he has attended several workshops, seminars and training programmes on Leadership and Legislative Procedures and Practice both in Nigeria and in the United States, South Korea, Kenya and South Africa.

He has also been honoured with local and international awards, including Ambassador for Peace by the Universal Peace Federation, Icon of Nation Building in Africa by the African Students Union Parliament and an Award of Excellence as a worthy Alumni of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar.
He is a fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria.

A true Democrat, Lukpata believes in service with integrity, transparency and humility.

His philosophy is;
