Minister Decries Level Of Looting, Destruction of Health Facility In Calabar


The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adeleke Olorunnimbe-Mamora was yesterday in Calabar to have an on-the-spot assessment of the level of damage, looting and dislocation caused by men suspected to be terrorist who hide under the ENDSARS protesters to unleash mayhem on the Facilities of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, CALABAR.

FNPH, Calabar is the nation’s foremost Mental health hospital and one of the first five health facility in the country, founded in 1903.
The hospital community woke up on the 24th October, 2020 to see the entire hospital being invaded by men and women that could pass for terrorist. They completely overwhelmed the security apparatus and looted and carted away medical equipment not limited to X-ray machines, sterilising machine, ECG Machine, office furniture and equipment, office fittings, kitchen utensils, food items, patient’s bed, matreses and bedsheets, pharmaceutical Drugs, retail drugs, cars were damaged and parts carted away, solar lights, electrical fittings, Power generators, medical laboratories Equipment and kits, late night Cash received and staff personal effects and certificates etc.
The height of madness was the releasing of patients into the streets of Calabar.

The Minister was shocked at the level of damage and express disappointment why human being could be so cruel to each other. He pledged the ministry support to the hospital and will ensure the hospital comes to optimal operation and call on individuals, public spirited organisation and other international allied health services organisations to come to the aid of the hospital.

On hand to recieve the Minister was the Medical director, Dr. Bassey Edet, The Head of Administration, Mrs. Ekanem Davis., Heads of departments, and staff of the hospital. Also in attendance to take the Minister around was the CMD, UCTH, Dr. Ikpeme Asanye Ikpeme.

The Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu who came along with the state Commissioner for health Dr Betta Edu ceased the liberty of the Minister’s visit to woo him to commission part of the General hospital completed.

The case of the FNPH, CALABAR could best be akin to the invasion of the Isrealite by the Babylonians. By the special grace of God they shall rise again.
