Lawmaker Condemns Hijack of #EndSARS Protest By Hoodlums In Calabar, Suggest Way Forward
The Lawmaker representing Obubra 1 State Constituency in Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Friday Gabriel Okpechi, on Monday in Calabar condemned the hijack of the #EndSARS peaceful protests in Calabar by hoodlums.
In a motion sponsored by the Obubra 1 Lawmaker, titled; “MOTION CONDEMNING THE HIJACK OF THE #ENDSARS PROTEST BY HOODLUMS AND CALLING OF THE CROSS RIVER STATE GOVERNMENT TO CONSTITUTE AN INDEPENDENT PANEL OF ENQUIRY TO LOOK INTO THE WANTON DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTIES IN THE STATE”, Rt. Hon. Friday Okpechi, also condemned the wanton destruction that characterised the protest.
He call on the State Governor, Ben Ayade to constitute an independent panel of enquiry to look into the wanton destruction of properties in the state and insist that culprits must be made to face the law.
Meanwhile, the Lawmaker thanked the state Governor, Ben Ayade and former governors, Donald Duke, Liyel Imoke for their various roles that in one way or the other contributed in bringing the mayhem to a stop.

(1). The #ENDSARS which was waged across the country was designed to be peaceful. The protest which lasted for about 12 days across the country was peaceful, until some Hoodlums hijacked it and thereafter turned it into destruction and looting spree.
(2). The hijack of the protest in Calabar, however took a dramatic turn as hoodlums targeted choice State properties and notable private properties. The destruction saw to the downfall of choice Government assets like the CICC, Tinapa Hotel, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) Solidarity House, Government Printing Press, WAEC and NICMC and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
Private properties like the house of Senators Victor Ndoma Egba, Gershom Bassey’s Homes, etc were completely vandalized.
(3). This attack appears to be a well planned activities, as intelligence reports have it that Speed Boats were seen to have sailed into Calabar through our waterways. It has therefore, become imperative to call on the State Government to set up an independent panel of enquiry to thoroughly look into devilish acts carried against our state, fish out culprits and bring same to book to forestall such occurrence in the future.
(4). While condemning the attack on the State, we thank His Excellency, Senator (Prof.) Ben Ayade for being proactive to promise to take the youth out of the street by creating 20,000 employments in the state and local government, we therefore, enjoin His Excellency to timeously and speedily make good his employment promise.
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED AS FOLLOWS
(1). The State Governor do set up an Independent Panel of Enquiry to look into the destruction of both public and private properties, fish out the perprators and bring same to book.
(2). That members of the public be call upon to volunteer information that will lead to the discovery, recovery and prosecution of the hoodlums.
(3). That the government do make good its promise to provide 20,000 for our youths to keep them engaged.
