Calabar Municipal Council Chairman Begs Ayade To Revisit Tax Evasion Policy

The National union of Road transport workers (NURTW) under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) embarked on a familiarization visit to the office of the Mayor of Calabar, Prince ( Hon ). Effefiong Nta Eke. The visit which importance was clearly highlighted and necessary to the council considering their close relationship over the years.

The Mayor appreciated the union for finding time to foster a healthy relationship between the council and the labour union which will in turn yield a remarkable result.

While speaking during the visit, the Mayor also frowned at the attitude of companies & major hotels, banks, Private Motor Park owners/operators & other revenue generating outfits operating within jurisdiction of the cosmopolitan city, hiding under the tax waiver directive of the Governor to destabilise the existing IGR of calabar municipal council.

He also stressed that indigenes of Calabar municipal council should be drafted into the revenue committee to correct the lopsidedness that has been experienced in the echelon of the union, judging that it’s very improper for the union to be generating revenue meanwhile the people aren’t direct beneficiaries. The mayor appealed to the state governor to revisit the taxation policy especially when non low income earners are adamant to pay taxes even when they weren’t captured in the tax exemption policy.

The chairman of the Nigeria Labour congress, Comrade Ben Ukpepi thanked the Mayor for such a great opportunity to interface with the council and forge a healthy relationship between the council and the union.

He also allayed the challenges faced in coordinating their daily activities without an external source of income with the tax exemption posing as a heavy blow to the union. The comrade appealed to the State government to look into the tax exemption policy which effect has been enormous and promised to liaise with the State Governor to achieve a lasting solution.

The HOLGA also gave her opinion on the tax exemption policy which has really affected the council financially with regards to the internal generated revenue (IGR), she also stressed that the management of the motor parks falls directly under the purview of the local government area according to the constitution, she also mentioned the need to readdress the tax exemption policy.
