COVID-19: Betta Edu, Cross River Health Commissioner, Conducts UNICAL Ultra-modern Isolation Center Ground Breaking

 

 

Following the ground breaking ceremony for the ultra-modern Holding bay/ Isolation center at the University of Calabar, Cross River State COVID-19 Answer will have greater isolation capability. This is a significant advance in the response of the state to COVID-19 as the new Holding Bay would improve the state’s isolation capacity and provide treatment for students accused of COVID-19 cases.

In the presence of DG PHCDA Dr Ekpeyong, SA Health Dr Ushie, Perm Sec State Ministry of Health Bar Takon, EOC representatives and the Chairman of UNICAL COVID-1919, the Honorable Commissioner for Health Dr Betta Edu, in the company of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi, laid the foundation stone for the construction of an ultra-modern Holding Bay and Isolation Center

With more than 45,000 students returning to the University of Calabar campus, there is an urgent need for improved planning and monitoring to avoid the school’s COVId-19 outbreak.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Obi led Dr. Betta Edu and the entire state COVId-19 task force EOC around the university to determine the level of work done and the holes that could exist that the state should work with the university to fill those gaps.

Speaking during a visit to the University, Dr Betta Edu, the Honorable Commissioner for Health, shared her satisfaction with the level of work and planning that the VC and its management team have so far placed in place to avoid the outbreak of this pandemic.

I want to wholeheartedly congratulate the Vice Chancellor and her COVID-19 taskforce team for the efforts they have made to ensure the safety of all their returning students, I wanted to take this tour to allow me to see for myself the degree of preparedness put in place by the taskforce team of COVID-19 and I must say that I am very pleased with what I have seen so far and assure parents/guidance that the taskforce team is very prepared.

For her part, Vice Chancellor Prof Florence Obi commended the Commissioner for the massive support so far from the State Government to the Institution, reaffirming her commitment to partner with the CRSG to minimize the number of cases of COVID-19 reported in the State. She thanked the Commissioner for making time to come to inspect the level of compliance, the prevention work done so far by COVID-19

You can rest assured that your issues are solved when you have a Health Commissioner like Dr Betta Edu. Sen Prof Ben Ayade’s government has been immensely supportive of UNICAL and I can’t help but commend it. Through Dr Betta Edu, we have received massive support from this government as more COVID-19 preventive items have been donated to us again today. On behalf of the entire Senate, Management and Students of this University, we appreciate her for these kind gestures as we have set up modalities that will keep our students safe. Parents and counselors should be confident that their stations are in good hands and in a safe atmosphere.

To date, the University of Calabar has set up hand washing stations across the entire campus, over 100 hand-held infrared thermometers, 20 standing non-contact infrared thermometers, a holding bay, under construction to serve both male and female students, a rigorous transport system ensuring social distance, disinfecting tunnels, compulsory use of facemasks, hand sanitizers at strategic locations.

On behalf of his team, the Chairman of the COVID-19 Task Force of the School, Dr Kingsley Akaba, applauded the Commissioner for her positive disposition in terms of health issues and support, as he pledged continued collaboration with the State.

The event was highlighted by the official ground breaking/blocks laying the cornerstone of the ongoing construction by Dr Betta Edu, the health boss.
