The lawmaker representing Obubra/Etung federal constituency, Rt. Hon. Mike Etaba has said if Nigeria is serious about food security, it should release funds to Cross River State Government.

The lawmaker who made the called in Abuja, said it has become necessary to speak out, adding that if federal government refuses to stepped in, it may lose billions of naira.

Calling on the federal government, Etaba said at this time where there is shortage in food circulation across the country following the stay-at-home order, it is important for the government of Nigeria to give out bailout to Cross River Governor, Sir Ben Ayade so as to enable the Rice Seedlings Factory in the state facilitate more productions.

Continuing, Etaba said due to the coronavirus outbreak which is not only a sad situation, but an international disaster, the state could no longer distribute the ones they have in stock, which have resulted to lose of billions.

“Cross River State is not an oil producing state, we only depend on our local productions, therefore, I am calling on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the federal government to quickly intervene on the current situation in Cross River.
“I’m also calling on other states whose main source of income is agriculture to support Cross River state government in this trying time”.

Recalled that on Thursday, Cross River state governor, Sir Ben Ayade says the state may lose billions of naira to the Coronavirus pandemic unless the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the federal government urgently stepped in.

Ayade told newsmen Thursday at the Rice Seeds and Seedlings Factory in Calabar, that before the outbreak of Coronavirus the Factory had received an order of N8. 5billion worth of rice seedlings from the CBN for onward delivery to states.
