Following the appointment of Dr Betta Edu as Commissioner for health in December 2019; special emphasis has been put on General Hospital calabar which she describes as the flagship secondary health care facility in Cross River State. Staff and patients can attest to the fact that she basically sleeps in the Hospital. Dr Edu who resumes there at 6:30am most days, go for other assignments, returns and leaves as late as 11pm has in 6 week worked with staff to change the narrative as client inflow has doubled, wards are fully booked and revenue has doubled.
As a way to motivate staff, she has said that the Governor of Cross River State Sen Ben Ayade whose earnest desire is to ensure Cross River State has the very best health care delivery system in Nigeria, will give “A 200,000 cash donation and a car donation to the best staff and best hospital unit respectively at the end of the year” The best staff will also have her picture hanged at the reception of the hospital besides the President and Governors Picture to motivate others!
The Honorable Commissioner for Health Dr Betta Edu has earlier today called on the Nurses and staff of General Hospital Calabar to show dignity, dedication, commitment, and passion for the job. Speaking during an enlarged meeting with all the Nurses of the hospital, the Commissioner frowned at the illegal practices and unnecessary extortion of money from patients and lack of care and attention as well as gross negligence of duty as that was a daily practice of hospital Staff.
“The bad news is that you extort money illegally from patients and still treat them poorly forgetting how noble your profession is. A lot of you don’t know that we get this reports on a daily basis with pictures as evidence. Before you destroy this hospital we will weed you out of the system. new hands will come on board soon, don’t teach them evil.”
She solicited for the right practices to be done informing them that by next month the will feel the full impact of AYADE MAGIC in the hospital. “Our Governor is providing a very conducive working environment, that you would be proud of. Thank you for doubling client inflow and revenue in one month, let’s do more!!!”
the Permanent Secretary Barr Takon Asu charged the nurses and all other staff to always respect the civil service code and show more commitment to their job by being punctual, discipline and very courageous in discharging their duties. Mrs Okon thanked the State Governor Sen Ben Ayade for giving them a young, dedicated, vision full and hardworking lady as Commissioner for Health as this is a clear indication that “Ayade is indeed working” she pledged their unflinching support to the Honorable Commissioner and assured her that they will not only sit up but will key into the Governor’s wonderful innovations and ideas to get the Health sector on speed lane again.
The hospital will very soon have a hotel so patient’s relatives can have where to sleep and a world class canteen where food will be sold with nutritionists taking the sole responsibilities of regulating the diets of patients with chronic disease cases. henceforth, consumable and drugs will be centralized and be gotten from the Central Medical Store: pharmacy as what is received/collected will be accounted for on a regular basis with auditors coming for internal audit regularly. There is provision of solar power to provide electricity and reduce cost of diesel, health workers are not allowed to collect any money from patient. All payments will be made at pay point.
Dr Iwara Iwara the head of public health department, the CMS of the hospital Dr Kumah and the Director of Administration were all in attendance during the meeting.
