NWC To Dissolve Ward, LG Exco Over Supreme Court Decision, Ayade Lobby PDP’s NWC

As Governor Ben Ayade has strengthened the lobby of the National Working Committee, NWC, members to abolish the execo chapter of the ward and local government following the ruling of the Supreme Court, the long fight over who governs Cross River PDP is yet to be over.

The group of Ayade had lost its first and second fight to authenticate both the High Court and Appeal’s list of its parallel ward and local government chapter executives, leading them to go to the Supreme Court to upturn the ruling of the lower court.

And the Supreme Court ruled on January 6, 2021, that the NASS list was still the authentic one.

Delivering judgment on Suit No SC/CV/838/2020, between PDP and Col Austin Akobundu v. Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe and INEC, Justice Tijani Abubakar, JSC, upheld the Lower Court’s ruling and subsequently struck out the appeal of PDP on the ward and chapter exco list only if it directs parties to bear their respective costs in this matter. It was a vote made unanimously by all the judges.

Following the decision, Ayade is said to have strengthened the lobby of some NWC members to dissolve all wards and chapter executives of local government to pave the way for him to install his cronies at those levels of leadership.

He has reached out to his anchor men at NWC and some governors to intervene and create a soft landing for him by dissolving all the executives and holding another congress, not resting on his oars to take over the party structures.

In addition, his lobby team has also indicated that they should grant him the state executive committee after the expiry of the state caretaker committee for him to stay in the PDP.

Ayade is facing one of his Due Process aides, Alphonsus Eba, with Sen Stephen Odey from the same local government, for the seat of PDP State chairmanship.

His hatchet men, however, are said to have gone to work and opened up discussions with some members of the NWC who have taken up his cause with some elders of the party who sympathize with his case.

A source at the national party secretariat disclosed that after David Umahi, elders championing his path have argued that they don’t want to lose another PDP governor and are therefore finding ways to see how he can be accommodated.

It is said that the elders have muted the idea of surrendering Ayade to the entire state executive committee, zonal and national officials to pacify him to stay out rather than defect.

“One of the elders, who pleaded anonymity for fear of backlashes, said: “Truly, Gov Ayade has lost out at the ward and local government party structures with the Supreme Court ruling. And some people have made case to see how as the party leader in the state party structure he can also be accommodated in other party structure.

We are looking into it and we hope that by honoring the primary members of the State Executive Committee to him, other NASS members will be magnanimous in victory. No one will be content to be a governor and to lose the executives of the entire ward and chapter and still stay in the party.

Some of his die-hard loyalists and aides have been interested in the ‘dissolution initiative’ back home and have been canvassing for it as a last hope to re-capture the structure of the party.

“One of them, named after Obanliku’s Kenneth Odey, said: “Oga told us to stay calm as the party’s national body vowed to look into it and probably return the party to him. So, we’re still waiting.

However, as some NWC members are not willing to participate in any other sort of illegality with regard to Cross River as the party is involved in about three other litigations, Ayade is said to be facing strong opposition at the national secretariat.

Those opposed to the plot to abolish the ward and chapter excos argue that the Governor ab initio opposed all peaceful movements and rejected any sort of compromise agreement and wonder why he is coming up with another scheme that would disintegrate the party further.

Instead, they urged him to meet his people and amicably settle the problems without a third party, adding that their tenure will expire soon, just as some of them are still busy with how they can be elected for a second term.

One of them said: “He’s not even on good terms with a member of his state’s NWC.” So how can we support him because, a few days ago, the NWC, who was his assistant to the Presidency and National Assembly Matters, resigned his appointment? As people outside can think, it really isn’t easy.

Equally responding, after the historic verdict of the Supreme Court, a member of state PDP caretaker committee, who spoke of record, said it would be absolute foolhardy for NWC to consider dissolving the ward and chapter excos.

He said any attempt by NWC to temper the executives at those levels after multiple courts have authenticated them as having been duly elected and inaugurated for almost a year now would be equal to singing the PDP nunc dimittis in Cross River.

According to him, “political parties are not run like that neither can the NWC just wake up and dissolve a constituted executive body because the Court ruled against the governor.” political parties are not run like that.

A party leader, Chief Ausquo Asuquo, of the PDP chapter of Calabar South, said it was unfortunate that after Governor Ayade had pushed the mechanism that created the ward and chapter excos and then turned around to lobby for its dissolution because the courts ruled against any attempt to infuse unknown names into it.

Asuquo urged him to accept the result because he was the one who challenged the same procedure, adding that the PDP is larger than any human.
