The people of Erei-South Ward in Biase LGA, Cross River State have commence a recalling process of her Councillor, Hon. Edwin Ukam over aledged abysmally poor representation, tagging him a “Diaspora Councillor”.
The agitation for recall of the Legislator is being spare-headed by a group of people called: the ‘Erei-South Youths for Good Governance (EYGG)’. The group maintained that his recall was necessary and timely due to the obvious vacuum in leadership, inaccessibility, poor performance and inability to put the ward interest above his personal interest in the course of legislative engagements.
The Group further aledged that the Honourable Councillor has neither visited the ward nor call for any meeting of ward members and often do not pick calls since his emergence and subsequent inauguration to the office as their representative, hence completely loosing touch with his people and creating a serious vacuum as the position is highly critical to the political, socio-economic development and advancement of the ward being a rural area.
The group explain that they were going round the ward to collect signatures and collate same in onward submission to the appropriate electoral umpire.
When contacted on phone by our correspondence, the Ward Chairman of the People Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Obin Egwu, confirms the incident and also decry the Councillor’s inaccessibility and distance with the people of the ward, as such the PDP being the Councillor party and her Ward Leaders have also been complaining seriously.
In his words, Mr. Obin said: “Yes I am aware of the agitation by some party members and group of people for the recall of Hon. Edwin Ukam. I also think their complains are very genuine as the Legislator has not met with the Ward Caucus and the party at large since his emergence, despite such massive support given to him during the elections. Not even a ‘Thank You’ visit or meeting from him to the ward till date. It is completely unfair and unbecoming of him.
The PDP Ward Chairman further lamented the inglorious role alledgely played by the Honourable Councillor in support of a recent motion against the disbandment of a Committee which was duly constituted by the Chairman of Council which has two of his ward members as Chairman and member, as angering and provoking the entire ward.
In another development, the ward Chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) Mr. Charles Ekup Edadi, when reached on phone told our reporter that he is equally aware of the recall processes, noting that Hon. Edwin lapses is felt by all the people of Erei-South irrespective of party and political affiliations. He added that: “Hon. Eddy has failed to play the advocacy role promised during his campaigns to aggressively resolve lingering issues and unite warring communities within Erei-South. As at today, no genuine moves have been initiated by the Councillor towards actualising genuine reconciliation and restoration of peace among the warring communities”.
The APC Chairman however noted that instead of playing activate role towards achieving peace, the Legislator’s actions and inactions are rather “inciting war and promoting division among us as a people”.
All efforts by our correspondence to reach out to the Councillor, Hon. Edwin Ukam was unsuccessful as his phone was unreachable as at time of filing this report.
