Cross River 2023: Youth Wants Power Shift To South, Endorses Godwin Nyiam For Deputy Governor
By Anthony Akpama, Calabar
A youth group under the aegis of the Cross River State branch of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has requested that a youth be permitted to run for Deputy Governor of Cross River State in next year’s general elections.
The Youths Council endorsed Godwin Nyiam, the Director-General of the Department of Public Transport, DOPT, for the top job, stating that the development will aid in the state’s harmonisation as back-to-back agitation is sacred.
During the visit, Mr. Dan Obo, Chairman of the NYCN Cross River chapter, stated that the Council will not hesitate to back the DOPT DG in his bid for Deputy Governor if his party, the APC, deems him worthy to run with Sen. Bassey Otu.
“If you look at Cross River State, things are starting to run out of control, and when you don’t have young people involved, it becomes bad,” Obo remarked.
“We won’t have an option but to say okay, our own is there and ready to go if your party thinks you fit to be on the ballot alongside Sen. Prince Otu.”
He claimed that as a PDP member, his party is anti-youth.
“We stand firm with the Governor, Obong of Calabar, and our southern brethren in the belief that it is their son’s turn to be Governor.
“We join the Governor, Obong of Calabar, and our southern comrades in believing that it is their son’s turn to be Governor.”
“I am a member of the PDP, not the APC, and because my party is anti-youth today, they will hear from us, whether it was fifty persons that came from the South to run, it’s none of their business.” It will not work to have 500 delegates decide the fate of Cross River.”
Godwin Nyiam responded by thanking the Council for considering him worthy of their support, saying that “words are never enough.” For me, this is uplifting.”
“We have come together as young people because it is our job, irrespective of party lines, to save our State from ruin,” Godwin added.
The presentation of an award to the DG and group pictures were highlights of the visit.
