Cross River Battle Against Tuberculosis Goes Digital & Mobile As Governor Ben Ayade Launches Truck Wellness On Wheels

As focus was focused on COVID-19 response, TB response and indeed many other diseases threatening the health sector suffered enormously back in the year 2020.

This was not the case in the state of Cross River, as the State Ministry of Health was able to preserve and even improve the response to TB, as well as other disease responses, reducing the mortality associated with these diseases while properly addressing COVID-19.

Sen Prof Ben Ayade’s government rose to the task of partnering with its partners to combat this TB disease in the state, resulting in Cross River State ranking as the second best performing state in Nigeria’s TB activities for 2020.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a severe infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs, spreading the tuberculosis-causing bacteria from one person to another through tiny droplets released through coughs and sneezes into the air. With over 1.4 million individuals dying of TB as of 2019,
State Governor Sen Prof Ben Ayade Represented by the Honorable Commissioner for Health Dr Betta Edu today launched Wellness on Wheels (WOW), an innovation sponsored by USAID through KNCV in the diagnosis of Tuberculosis, in order to step up the fight against TB in the State. The truck that contains a CAT device X-ray machine that can send you a presumptive case in 3 minutes also has GeneXpert machines that can check diagnosis in 2 hours.

During the launch exercise, Health Commissioner Dr Betta Edu expressed his appreciation to State Governor Sen Professor Ben Ayade for his unrelenting efforts to help the health sector while ensuring more positive outcomes for cross-riverians in improving the health care delivery system. As a result of Governor Ben Ayade’s relentless support, our state became the 2nd best in TB activities in Nigeria and I assure you that we will not relent as TB case finding/management will be stepped up, we want to be number 1. Even in rural communities, TB diagnosis and treatment will be brought to our door steps by this innovation. People don’t need to go to hospitals/laboratories to get to our door steps.

Our TB testing and treatment has now gone to Wheels, and free testing and treatment is open to all for the next 6 months. The truck is going to rural communities in Boki LGA from the municipality of Calabar; because Boki has the highest burden/ number of positive TB cases in CRS. In the hinterlands, hard-to-reach areas and villages, I call on Cross Riverians to come out and benefit from this digital innovation. Cross River State would like to thank USAID, Dr Betrand Odume, KNCV Country Director, and his entire team for their support.

Dr Janet Ekpenyong, DG of the CRSPHCDA, expressed her enthusiasm for the new innovation that will help facilitate the state’s TB fight. Our primary health workers will mobilize the communities to benefit. The KNCV Country Director, Dr Betrand Odume, applauded the State for not relenting in the fight against TB while thanking the State Government and the Ministry of Health for an outstanding performance
