Cross River Govt calls on Federal ministry of works and housing to partner on road construction
The Cross River State Government has called on the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to partner in the construction and maintenance of Federal Roads domiciled in the State.
The Deputy Governor, Professor Ivara Ejemot Esu made the call when declaring open a Five day 25th Meeting of the National Council on Works holding at the Calabar International Conference Centre,Calabar.
Professor Esu,who frowned at the lack of maintenance culture by relevant Ministries and Agencies, enjoin Nigerians to revived the eroded culture of maintenance for the smooth operation of Socio- Economic advancement.
He expressed the hope that, the five day Conference on Works will proffer solutions to the dilapidated roads across the Country to reduce the increasing rate of accident and ease the movement of goods and services.
The Deputy Governor commended the initiative of President Buhari for the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund created in February, 2018,that has helped in the construction and rehabilitation of some major Federal roads in the Country.
Professor Esu however, appealed to the Federal Government to assist the State Government in the Construction of the Super High Way Project and the Bakassi Deep Sea Port,which will served as evacuation corridor to the Northern part of the Country and some Northern African Country.
In a key note address,the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola,represented by his Minister of State Engineer Abubakar Aliyu said, the Theme of this Year’s Meeting of the National Council on Works, which is “Infrastructure as the Pathway for Prosperity” was chosen to address the complex issues of Road Infrastructure Development towards proffering tangible solutions.
He emphasized that, the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing will carry other relevant Agencies saddled with similar responsibilities of monitoring, maintenance and survey for the overall development road network to the desired standard.
Mr Fashola urged Council Members to have an intensive interactive session on the future of Nigerian’s road sector, with the believed that,the Meeting will provide the desired new insight into Highways Development for National prosperity.
Earlier, in a welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Works, Dr. Ihort Achu maintained that, the theme of the National Conference Meeting is in line with the aspirations of Governor Ben Ayade,who has initiated an Agro Industrial Revolution in the state of which, road infrastructure is a major priority.
Goodwill Messages were presented by the Representatives of Council of Registered Engineers of Nigeria,COREN and the Federal Road Safety Corps.
The Conference was attended by the Thirty Six States Commissioners for Works, as well as the Chairmen of the States and National Assembly Committees on Works.
