Cross River Health Commissioner, Betta Edu Support UNICAL With COVID-19 Items, Commends VC For Inaugurating COVID-19 Task Force Team

In line with the advice of Dr. Betta Edu, Chairman of the Nigeria Commissioners for Health Forum, on the need for all tertiary institutions in the country to set up a COVID-19 Task Force team in their different universities, Prof. Florence Obi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, blazed the trail by inaugurating the taskforce team of the varsity to ensure that COVID-19 laid down rules/regulations

In a courtesy visit to the Honorable Health Commissioner Dr Betta Edu, led by Team Chairman Dr Akaba Kingsley, the team spoke to the Commissioner about their assigned responsibilities while requesting support from the State Government to allow them to effectively manage the large number of students and staff who will return to school by 5 February.

During the visit, the Health Commissioner, who also serves as the Chairman of the CRS COVID-19 Taskforce, again congratulated the Chairman of the Taskforce and his members, noting that their appointment is a clear testament to their ability, enthusiasm and dedication to accountability, even in the past, while commending Vice Chancellor Prof. Florence Obi for always being outstanding. The Commissioner also congratulated her once again on her well-deserved appointment as the University of Calabar’s first Female Vice Chancellor.

I advised on the need to decentralize the COVID-19 response to all universities a couple of weeks ago, with universities setting up their own task force but linking them to the State Task Force for better coordination and support, and I am proud that my own state has set the ball rolling.

It is of great importance that screening areas are created at every point of entry into and out of the school, where everyone will be screened using infrared thermometers, due to the large number of staff and students who will return to school. Everyone going through must use their face mask, hand washing facilities can be provided for regular hand washing at strategic locations within the school premises, sub-teams can be created in all facilities to ensure that NO MASK NO MOVEMENT within the school is monitored and enforced. Before the invitation of the State Response Team, a holding area should be established at the Medical Center for emergency cases, compulsory use of facemasks by all staff and students, hand sanitizers in all offices, sensitization materials pasted at strategic locations to awaken the consciousness of students. Both of these would avoid the loss of COVID-19.

Dr. Edu supported the team with PPEs, N95 facemasks, Gloves, Medijet Face Masks, Hand Washing Liquid Soap, Face Shield, Isolation Gowns, and a list of other very important prevention items on behalf of the State Government, while calling on the School to adopt the Antigen Rapid Testing before using the PCR test for further confirmation due to the high number of staff and students in the Institute. She asked the university leadership to allocate a vehicle to the team to ease their work while calling on other universities to imitate Calabar University.

Students who do not comply with the procedures laid down by COVID-19 should face the penalties of the Task Force Committee, as indicated by Chairman Dr. Akaba, accompanied by Mr. Omang Robert Secretary, Dr. Odey Paul Member, Mr. Patrick Ogar Member and Mr. George Odok Media Personnel Committee Member.
