Cross River State Government Willing To Address Problems Associated With Cocoa Farming, Says Ivara Esu
The State Government says it is willing to address the problems associated with Cocoa farming and production in the State through relevant agencies.
The Deputy Governor, Professor Ivara Ejemot Esu stated this in Calabar, when he received in audience the National President Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria (CFAN) in Government House Calabar.
Professor Esu maintained that, Cocoa farming is a passion among the people of the State with a willing population to go into the cash crop.
He said, Government has put a machinery in place to ensure that, Cocoa is taken to another level by acquiring more land to plant early, maturing and disease resistance Cocoa as well as the establishment of an Ultra – Modern Cocoa Processing Factory in Ikom.
The Deputy Governor explained that, it is the desire of Government to take the number one position in the world in terms of Cocoa production.
He called on Cocoa farmers to take advantage of the opportunity created by the Central Bank of Nigeria – CBN to increase their production through Anchor Borrowers and APPEALS Support Programme.
Professor Esu called on the participants at the National Cocoa conference holding in Ikom to take full advantage of the Conference to increase their productivity.
Earlier, the President of the Cocoa Farmers Association of Nigeria – CFAN, Comrade Adeola Adegoke intimated that, the Conference is aimed at creating an avenue for interaction and sharing of ideas on new technology in Cocoa farming.
Mr. Adegoke said, the theme of the Conference is; “repositioning Nigeria Cocoa industry for prosperity of our Cocoa Farmers” adding that, farmers needed a lot of support by Government in terms of Agronomic practices for improved Cocoa beans.
He said CFAN believes much in the activities of the State Government under the leadership of Senator Ben Ayade who has transformed the Cocoa industry from scratch to where we are.
The Courtesy Visit was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Rev. Unimniake Joseph Ugbe, the Acting Chairman of Cocoa Board, Dr. Oscar Ofuka, the National Secretary of CFAN, High Chief Mgbeyak Leku, a member of the Association, Elder Etta Mbu Ogar and Williams Ifere, Head of Tree Crops (HTC), Ministry of Agriculture.
