Cross River targets 5000 metric tones of cocoa per annum, says Dr. Ofuka

By Augustine Ogar, Calabar

The Cross River state government under the leadership of His Excellency sir. Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade is to become the highest Cocoa producer in the World second only to Cotd’ Ivoire targeting an annual production of 5000 metric tonnes when its Utra- Modern Premium Cocoa Processing Industry in Ikom becomes operational soon.
This was disclosed recently by the state Acting Chairman of the Cross River Cocoa Board, Dr. Oscar Ofuka in Abuja, the nation’s capital city while receiving an award on impacting positively on humanity at the” Great Legends in Africa Award ( GLAGA), organised by Elation Communication Limited.
Dr. Ofuka said that Governor Ayade has revolutionized agribusiness in the state by seeking to make the Green Economy the black gold of the 21st century to replace Oil which is fast becoming maribund.
He said Governor Ayade’s target of hitting the production capacity of 5000 metric tonnes per annum is premised on the fact that the state has aggressively acquired and allocated land to about 3,500 Cocoa farmers across the 18 Local Governments to cultivate high yielding Cocoa with a gestation period of 18 Months.
Dr. Ofuka said the Governor’s digital approach to Cocoa farming and processing is to put a smile on the face of his people while surpassing the annual production capacity of Nigeria which is currently put at about 3,000 metric tonnes. ” We are sure that with the first ever Utra- Modern Premium Cocoa Processing Industry that is near completion in Ikom, it is a total break through because it is one of the finest, largest and the most automated Cocoa processing factory in Africa that will be crushing on completion about 120,000 metric tonnes of Cocoa per annum”, he said.
The Acting Chairman of the state Cocoa Board, hinted that the Governor’s vision is to create a Cocoa value chain, provide employment for the teeming Youthful population in the state and increase annual production to overtake the leading world producer which is Cotd’ Ivoire.
He urged other states’ Governors to emulate Governor Ayade’s vision of pursuing a Green Economy to increase Internally Generated Revenue ( I G R) for the development of their states in the face of decayed Infrastructure and population explosion challenges facing the nation.” I enjoin other leaders in the country to emulate the gesture of Governor Ayade of Cross River because Agribusiness is the way forward and with population explosion, the only way we can go, is to go back to Agriculture because Nigeria’s ecology supports Cocoa”, he stated.
