Disquiet In Cross River APC As Central Bigwigs Reject Zoning, Kick Against Governor Ayade’s Decision

By Dominic Kidzu

These are certainly not the best of times for the APC in Cross River State as the unity of all interests in the party and apparent resolve to reserve the Governorship to the Southern senatorial zone appear to have been torn in two. The heavyweights of the party from the Central senatorial zone who met at the weekend in Ikom announced that they have rejected the Governor’s decision to zone the ticket to the South in total exclusion of aspirants from other sections of the state, especially the central zone. Were this feeling to gain traction and to stand, the race would have been thrown open to all who want to run for the office not minding where they come from in the state.

There is no doubt that before this odacious move by Chief Chris Agara, Senator John Owan Enoh, Honourable Reverend Usani Uguru Usani and others, there have been muted complaints by several interests in the state against Governor Ben Ayade’s decision to zone the Governorship to the South exclusively. One of the hitherto under – the – table argument has been that the office of Governor has equitably been held by the three zones in the state and should therefore be thrown open to all comers at this time so that the people themselves will have the opportunity to choose the aspirant that best approximates their needs and aspirations. Party members in the Central zone have also always felt that before Governor Ayade came over to the APC last year most of the groundwork and sustenance of the party had all along been borne by them. It has been their feeling that they would not accept to only play a bit – part in the running of affairs of the party.

These are surely testy times for the APC in Cross River State that demand very delicate diplomacy and inclusive political engineering to side – step the ever present risk of implosion. With the PDP looking over our shoulder with defined and deliberate interest in 2023, the APC cannot afford any internal crisis within its rank and file at this time. Already there is disappointment among the followership that the members of the highest rung of leadership in the party have not been able to put their house in order and have now arrived at the market square to disagree openly with one another thereby throwing open their flanks of membership for poachers to harvest. It has become imperative that the Governor should midwife the disparate but legitimate ambitions of our party leaders towards achieving singularity of purpose if the ship of APC should be saved from the turbulent waves that look ready to rock its sails.

The not so distant debacle of Zamfara and Rivers state began with careless questions such as “who are they”?

“What can they do “?

” Do they own the structures “?

Every party member is important and relevant and no suggestion or argument by any party member is totally without merit.

A stitch in time saves nine.
