COVID-19: Lion’s Club Partners C/River Govt To Promote Effective Hand Wash

Community based sensitization and campaigns are said to be the most effective means of information dissemination as messages and information are interpreted through the easiest languages or means.

This is the method adopted by members of the Calabar Lion’s club as they gathered together to create awareness among members on the Covid-19 pandemic and best ways to remain safe all through the period as they organized an in house training and sensitization to acquaint themselves with all global requirements in order to remain safe and healthy as the world awaits a possible remedy to the coronavirus(Covid-19).

They say the call was drawn from the fact that simple hygiene can be good enough in managing the pandemic, hence the essence of having an expert’s opinion on best ways to fight the disease.

The Director General,Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, who was guest and resource person at the event, enumerated Government’s determination to keep the state and its citizens free from the dreaded Covid-19.

She said the state Government has done enough in creating policies that can assist citizens remain healthy at this period and beyond while also enumerating welfare plans and packages made available during the lock down period.

“Currently, the state is Covid-19 free and that is because our state Governor, Senator Professor Ben Ayade has deliberately made attempts to keep the state safe from the disease by shutting our borders both land, sea and air, aside that he has provided Personal Protective Equipment to our health facilities and our people alike, he has also made the wearing of nose mask compulsory and
these are the best ways to manage the pandemic if these precautionary measures are strictly adhered to.
I want to urge you all to continually beam the flash lights in your communities by regularly sensitizing people on the importance of regular hand wash, the use of nose mask and the maintenance of social distance.
Our Governor, Senator Professor Ben Ayade has also ordered the absorbion of 8,000 youths to curb hunger and youths restiveness this season”

On the growing and established relationship between the Lion’s club and the Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Ekpenyong said its commendable citing numerous intervention and assistance enjoyed by the state from members of various Lion’s Club in Calabar region, she therefore encouraged them to continue identifying with their communities to make live more convenient for all.

” Calabar Lion’s club have always shown support to the state Government especially Primary Healthcare Agency, just a while ago, you showed up massively by supporting some of our facilities in it’s renovations and upgrading, I wish other groups begin to emulate you and ensure we have a healthy society.

Speaking earlier, the past region’s chairman, Lion Chief Ene Cobham, past district Governor, Lion Princess Obo Mmesembe Edet and a one time Governor of the region, Lion Bascoba Bassey enjoined all members and attendees to become role models and ambassadors in any place they find themselves as they are privileged to receive first hand information concerning the Covid-19 virus.

“We are here to do a simple project called hand washing and to sensitize our fellow Lions and other people living within our neighbourhood letting them know the importance of hand washing and we felt that the best person and group to partner with is the Primary Healthcare Development Agency and the Director General, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, who with all sincerity champions the campaign in the grassroot”.

Other speakers who spoke at the gathering admonished members to avoid being overwhelmed with reports on the internet which may result into panic and mistakes. They urged all members to make practical steps in spreading and creating awareness on the dangers of flaunting guidelines on covid19 preventive measures.

The event had practical demonstration of all 8 W.H.O steps of hand washing by the Director General after which all members and guests participated. Also, there was setting up of banners and billboards in strategic locations within the metropolis which promotes good personal hygiene and Covid-19 preventive measures, Distribution of palliatives including liquid wash and consumables, surprise celebration of the Direct General’s birthday and decoration of newly inducted members including the Director General, Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Janet Ekpenyong, Mrs sally Enyim and Mr Edward Obi.

Lion’s club international is a nonpolitical, non religious service organization established in 1917 in Chicago Illinois by Melvin Jones with its headquarters in Oak, Brook Illinois with over 46,000 local clubs and more than 1.4 million members in about 200 countries of the world.

Communities across the world including calabar have benefited from their selfless services and intervention, ranging from healthcare and welfare packages, truely members of the Lion’s club are living and making impacts in their communities, a piratical expression of their motto “we serve” .
