Four Yahoo Boys Sentenced To Prison In Calabar
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Uyo Zonal Office won the conviction of four internet fraudsters before Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Calabar, Cross River State, on Thursday, June 24, 2021.
Eneji Emmanuel (a.k.a Karen Moana, Buccly Clunder, Mainer Chic, Karen Klunder), Adie Stephen Udie (alias Laura Vazquze), Nwandike Kelechi (a.k.a Bradley), and Victor Francis (alias Donald Walter) all pled guilty to accusations of love scam and obtaining by false pretense.
In light of their pleas, prosecution attorney Segun R. Akinrinlade urged the court to convict them in compliance with the parties’ plea bargain agreement. C.O. Bassey and Innocent Eze, the defense attorneys, appealed with the court for mercy.
After hearing from Counsel, the judge found the defendants guilty and punished them as follows:
Enegi Emmanuel was sentenced to three months in prison for registering for the American Paycheck Protection (PPP) loan with a false email address ([email protected]) and then defrauding unsuspecting citizens of their hard-earned money. He was given the alternative of paying a fine of N100,000.00 into the Federal Government’s account or performing community service at the Federal High Court and Ministry of Social Welfare Calabar for a month, which must be supervised by the court and the EFCC.
While Adie Stephen was sentenced to six months in prison for impersonating Laura Vazquez, an American citizen, and Dave Daley, the court ordered that the items seized from him be auctioned and the earnings transferred into the Federal Government’s account.
Nwandike Kelechi was sentenced to six months in prison, with the possibility of a fine of N300,000.00 and one month of community service. The court also ordered that the convict relinquish his iPhone 11 Pro Max and his HP Intel(R) Core laptop to the federal government.
Victor Francis was found guilty and sentenced to six months in prison for defrauding one Jean Judson out of $1,200 (one thousand two hundred dollars). A fine of two hundred thousand naira (N200, 000.00) plus one month of community service was also offered to the convict. He must surrender an iPhone 11 to the federal government as well as pay the victim $1,200 in restitution.
Following the convicts’ sentencing, Justice Ojukwu ordered that they be kept at the Calabar Correctional Service facility until they had paid the various fines imposed by the court.
On May 18, 2021, the offenders were apprehended in a sting operation by officers from the Commission’s Uyo zonal office.
