A pastor, Emeka Unaegbu, was killed inside his church during prayers in the Jikwoyi region of Abuja’s Federal Capital Territory capital, Nyanya Road, by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.

Pastor Unaegbu of the Goodnews City Church was assassinated on Tuesday evening while holding a lone vigil in his church, according to reports.

According to police reports, the cleric was killed by gunmen who tried to kidnap him from the church.

The gunmen were also suspected of being members of one of the ravaging armed gangs that have been kidnapping and killing people in the FCT’s outskirts.

The pastor’s body was discovered on the church grounds in the morning, according to witnesses.

He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

“By the time neighbors and some members found him lying in the house, he was barely breathing. He died while being rushed to the hospital, according to a source.

Pastor Unaegbu was said to be a prominent cleric in the Nyanya-Jikwoyi district, so the incident has reportedly thrown the area into mourning.

The incident was being investigated by local authorities, but no arrests had been made as of yet.

“With deep and heavy heart, l announce the sudden death of my beloved brother and pastor, Emeka Unaegbu,” a woman, Stella Okoro, posted on her Facebook page, mourning the pastor. May the Lord have mercy on you and welcome you into His kingdom. “Alleluia.”
