This week, the Niger Delta Development Commission shared over 1000 bags of rice and cash gifts to individuals and organisations, including political parties and individuals living with disabilities, across the state’s 18 local government areas.

The gesture was orchestrated from Calabar, the Cross River state capital, on the initiative of the Ministry of the Niger Delta Affairs and NDDC, Newswire report.

The distribution was going on simultaneously across the Niger Delta States, Hon.Orok Duke, the state distribution coordinator and a former speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, said, but this is the first time in Cross River that it will be done in a way that reaches small communities.

Orok said he would ensure that the palliative gets to everyone in the state, no matter how limited it is, and not for a few insiders who have always been the case.

For his part, Dan Obo, National Youth Council (NYCN) State Chairman, said that he appreciates the ministry’s and NDDC’s gesture and that more needs to be done to alleviate the people’s plight.

I have seen what is being handed out and everybody is involved and in order. Although something needs to be done, we appreciate this and because of this, someone won’t sleep hungry today.

Ms Grace Ekanem, one of the beneficiaries, said that her meeting chairperson had just told her to come to the venue and she saw that they were sharing rice when she arrived and she took part.
