Joe Biden Signs Executive Order To Reverse Donald Trump’s Policies Without Wasting Time

At a scaled-down ceremony supervised by over 20,000 National Guards in Washington DC, Joe Biden was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday. At the age of 78, Biden took the oath of office administered by US Chief Justice John Roberts and became the oldest US president in history.

In his inaugural address, the president vowed to end the “uncivil war” reeling from a ravaged economy and a raging coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 400,000 Americans in the deeply divided world, Reuters reports. He said, “To overcome these challenges requires so much more than words to restore the soul and secure America’s future.” In a democracy, this needs the most elusive of all things: unity. This uncivil war which pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal, must be ended.

If we open our souls instead of hardening our minds, we can do this.” In a reminder of the pandemic Biden will face as the president, the National Mall, usually packed with crowds of supporters, was filled with US flags.” Speaking on the Capitol stairs, where supporters of then-President Donald Trump clashed with police in a violent attack that left five dead on January 6, Biden cast his ascension as evidence that the assailants had failed to undermine the pillars of American democracy.

This is where we stand, just days after a riotous mob thought they could use violence to censor people’s will, to stop our democratic work, to drive us out of this sacred land. It has not occurred; it will never occur. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever,’ said Biden.

After being sworn in by US Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the court’s first Latina member, Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris, the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, became the first black male, first woman, and first Asian American to serve as vice president. The ceremony was skipped by Trump, who did not recognize the election defeat, as he declined to meet Biden or attend the inauguration of his successor, breaking with a diplomatic tradition seen as affirming the peaceful transition of power.

During his last speech at the Joint Base, Andrew, from where he boarded Air Force One for the last time and flew to his Mar-a-Lago retreat in Florida, also did not mention his successor. Biden’s inauguration, along with former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton and their families, was attended by top Republicans, including Vice President Mike Pence and the party’s Congressional leaders. In the meantime, President Biden signed an Executive Order on his first day in office, including the implementation of a national federal property mask mandate, the revocation of a Keystone XL oil pipeline permit, and the reversal of a travel ban from many predominantly Muslim and African nations, officials said.

The Wall Street Journal notes that the acts are meant to signal a more proactive response to the coronavirus pandemic and end some of the core policies of President Trump while setting the agenda for the next four years, coming after Biden was inaugurated as the 46th president in a midday ceremony.
