The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, has died.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, has died, according to Buckingham Palace.
“It is with great sadness that Her Majesty The Queen has declared the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” said a statement from Buckingham Palace.

The Duke of Edinburgh was married to Queen Elizabeth II for more than 70 years, making him Britain’s longest-serving consort.
The palace released this statement today.

He kept a busy schedule of public appearances well into his 90s, representing his own charitable interests.

He also accompanied the Queen on state occasions and royal visits all over the world.

He was in reasonably good health for a man of his age.

In 2011, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment of a blocked artery.

He was admitted to hospital with a bladder infection during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, and underwent an exploratory surgery on his abdomen in 2013.

But it wasn’t until May 2017, after over 20,000 solo public appearances, that the 96-year-old retired from his own royal duties, only stepping out to assist the Queen at major events.

While no official information about the Duke’s funeral have been published, it is believed that he will be given a royal ceremonial funeral rather than a state funeral, as he requested.

In the coming days, the Queen will sign off on the final plans.

In the year 1921, Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born on the Greek island of Corfu.

The prince entered the Royal Navy as a cadet when he was 18 years old.

He saw action in the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean during WWII, and was mentioned in despatches for his bravery.

Prior to his marriage to Princess Elizabeth in 1947, he renounced his Greek and Danish royal titles, took the surname Mountbatten, and became a naturalized British subject.

Their wedding was the first major state event following WWII’s conclusion.

He was unwavering in his devotion to the Queen. He left his job as a naval officer to help her in her position as monarch.

Prince Philip has been described by the Queen as her “constant strength and stay.”

Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward were their four children, and he was a much-loved grandfather and great-grandfather.

He saw himself as a moderniser inside the British empire, orchestrating the first royal walkabout, but he was also noted for his candid opinions and spontaneous remarks.

Prince Philip’s concern for young people led him to establish the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, and he contributed to over 800 charities and good causes, concentrating on his passions for wildlife conservation, technology, and sports.

Prince Philip has been an ever-present figure in the life of the United Kingdom since the 1940s, and he leaves behind a significant legacy.
