Lagos SDP Writes Open Letter To Governor Sanwo-Olu On Relief Materials, Increasing Crime Rates

3 min

Greetings from the leadership of the Lagos State Social Democratic Party (SDP)

We write with empathy on the pressure of governance at this time, particularly at this trying times and the continuous dedication to the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.

We want to identify with the efforts of your government at this time and most especially in the area of measure taken thus far to combating the COVID-19 pandemic and distribution of palliatives to the citizens in the state which was not only partisan, but was strictly shared among the APC members alone.

We wish to inform you that, SDP is so concern about the sharing formula of palliatives to Lagos state citizens. This is not time for politics, but to recognize the fact that amid the lockdown, people are hungry, the lockdown didn’t only affect APC members but to every lagosians, as such we demand equal sharing of relief materials to every Lagosians.

We want to express concerns of millions of our youths on the continued negligence without clear cut plan towards their welfare, despite being the largest group of constituents in the state. Furthermore, we want to also relate our surprise to your Excellency on the recent announcement for the citizens to stock up without plan on how the citizens most especially the youth will sustain themselves at this crucial time.

Your Excellency, it is pertinent to say that majority of these youths left without support are the small Business Owners, hairdressers, Butchers, Artisans, Traders, voluntary youth organization, etc. who depends majorly on daily earnings for their means of survival, and that of their families. Lagosians no longer finding it comfortable to keep confidence and hope in a future assured somewhere.

Hence, it is necessary to state that hunger is not a respecter of any man. And it is only after a good meal that one can find the heart to forgive anyone, including one’s kinsman.

Also, we want to draw your attention to the lingering crime that has continued to rocked the streets of Lagos and the danger ahead, since the declaration of Lockdown following the pandemic outbreak. What measures have you taken so far to curtail these incidents? Lagosians no longer sleep, the little food items stocked in our houses are no longer safe. Hoodlums keep catering away people’s food stuffs due to hunger.

Sir, we want to categorically state that the spread of covid 19 can only be reduce if 60% of relief materials are provided to the poor, so as to enable them abide by the enforcement. There is needs for rapid response in our security sectors, in the past one week, Lagos has become a laughing stock following the increase of crime rate in the state.

In view of the aboveground, below are the preferred solutions:

(1). Reaching out to indigenes through each of the community head.

(2). Involving all the state stakeholders e.g.IPAC(inter party advisory council) where all political parties in the state are members of the council and it will help in reaching out to their various members without any partisanship complain any longer. This should be taking into consideration in distributing the second phase of the relief materials as planned.

(3). Security operatives should be on standby and patrol in all the 20 local government council of the state.
(4). Civil service commission should be a very good example to others from the lowest level to Apex level and all political offices holder are not left out in this regards.

Also, the following should be taken into consideration :
(1). Proper education and more publicity on covid 19

(2). Proper usage and accountability of the donation received.

(3). Further preparation and budget review in favour of our health sectors.

(4). Emergency response squad on Covid 19 in all our local government in conjunction with Lagos state government and NCDC.

(5). Targeting more isolation centre with minimum capacity of over 1,000 beds in all our local government.

(6). Cancellations of Lagos state internal revenue taxes for 3 month period.

(7). Cancellation of Lagos State water cooperation bills for 3 month period.

(8). Cancellation of Ekedc bills for 3month period(subjected to federal government approval).

Your Excellency, it is paramount you note that those who have nothing left to loose have nothing to fear, and are bound to remain dangerous to the safety of both the rich and the poor. SDP, as a party, cannot continue fold its arms while the state graduates into a state of complete lawlessness owing to poor welfarism and continuous use of state powers to intimidate and enforce lockdown orders.
We wish you divine guidance for more fruitful efforts in your decision making.
