Her Excellency, the wife of the executive Governor of Cross River State, Dr. Mrs. Linda Ayade, received the Uyo Zonal Commander of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons, (NAPTIP) Barr. Nduka Nwanwenne, in her office.
Speaking at the event, the Governor’s wife expressed regret that we live in a world that the unjustified trade and enslavement of human beings by others continues to gain grounds in Nigeria.
Human trafficking involves the use of deception to exploit the vulnerable through forceful stripping of their dignity and self-worth.
Trafficked victims are compelled to sell their inherent freedom, used for sex trafficking, their vital organs are being harvested and sold for transplant and are subject to coercive subjugation. Their cry for help is drowned in the sea of constant oppression and general sense of apathy which has continued for centuries.
To curb trafficking in persons, different approaches must be employed to enlighten young people and their families about the danger involved in migration to Europe and other places where they assume that the grass is greener and gold can be picked on the street. Human trafficking is an issue that needs to be addressed because, aside from the fact that it perpetuates crime all over the world, it severely damages the lives of its innocent victims.
Measures to reduce trafficking should been taken by governments and non-government organizations, and these include the creation of both international and national anti-trafficking laws and programs for the prevention of trafficking and rehabilitation of trafficking victims.
However, it is evident that more needs to be done. Aside from having more aggressive campaigns against human trafficking, raising awareness for prevention should be at the forefront of all anti-trafficking initiatives
The eradication of human trafficking cannot be done overnight. Even the toughest anti-trafficking legislation will be ineffective until global cooperation and local participation is ensured for the complete abolishment of human trafficking to be achieved.
