Nigerian Senate Considers Creation of Ministry For Cows and Goats

The Nigerian Senate is debating the establishment of a ministry for cows and goats.

The Senate is debating a bill that would establish a national database for cows.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, the bill to create the National Livestock Bureau received second reading.

The agency will be in charge of identifying, tracing, and registering livestock such as cows and goats, according to a proposed law sponsored by Muhammad Enagi from Niger’s south, among other things to prevent cattle rustling.

It will also ensure that all livestock in Nigeria is protected, regulated, and managed.

The previous senate considered a similar bill, but it did not pass.

The new bureau’s responsibilities include creating a national livestock identification database, controlling livestock movement, and ensuring disease outbreak prevention.

It’s also in charge of ensuring food safety, accountability, and knowledge in the food supply chain, as well as preventing cattle rustling to put an end to Nigeria’s long-running farmer-herder dispute.

According to Enagi, the bill would help resolve diseases and other risks to human life caused by livestock movement, in addition to preventing cattle rustling.

He added that the responsible agency would ensure that animal products purchased or sold in Nigeria can be easily tracked to ensure human protection.

The senator stated that the agency’s livestock identification would include ownership as well as other specifics such as origin, birthplace, sex, and breed.

The bill was referred to the red chamber’s agriculture and rural development committee for further action after deliberation.
