An Open LETTER TO THE DG IN COMMEMORATION OF HIS ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY IN OFFICE
I recall vividly how I hurriedly picked up my phone a year ago, to inquire of google your personal profile, just after you were announced the new Director General of the NYSC. All that I read didn’t make much sense being that I was yet to have a personal encounter with you. That notwithstanding, I have closely followed your transformational policies in the last twelve months and it is obvious your sojourn with the scheme was predicated on just one primary objective; rebranding the scheme and raising young people who will drive the wheel of change in our society.
I have always maintained that the two most significant qualities that should be looked out for in any leader are; Capacity and Integrity. While capacity is a measure of a Leader’s ability to do what he promised to do, Integrity refers to his ability to keep to his promise to do that which he had promised to do. Like President Kagame of Rwanda, you have once more proven to the whole world that Africa still got leaders who are in possession of these two qualities.
Perusing through the agenda you unveiled a year ago, which included sustaining effective utilization of the potentials of Corps Members for optimal benefit; Pursuing a technologically driven organization to deepen effective service delivery; Improving on the welfare and security of Corps Members and staff; reinvigorating NYSC ventures and skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programme and strengthening existing collaboration with stakeholders, it is palpably obvious your passion was clearly about the Corps Members and positioning the scheme for better impact.
Needless to say that just twelve months later, you have shown an unmatched speed in the actualization of these agenda, you have unraveled another face of public service not characterized with a fleet of excuses and blame games, but a solution oriented, focused and result hungry pattern of leadership that has brought about the immense transfiguration of the scheme. We now have a scheme the entire nation is proud of, a crop of young people hungry for impact, change and development due to your regular motivation and unrelenting support.
Mr. DG Sir, we are not oblivious of your innovative verification process for foreign-trained Prospective Corps Members which has successfully sieved out fake graduates, many of which could hardly spell their names and brings shame to the scheme at their various places of primary assignment. This is an achievement that is unrivalled since the inception of the scheme. This has afforded us some more confidence in the quality of graduates who adorn themselves with the NYSC khaki.
I recall how in the past weeks, in the face of the COVID 19 pandemic that has tortured great and small nations, you have spurred Corps Members in all the States through their respective State Coordinators to assist in any way possible in the fight against the virus. From the distribution of palliatives to indigent communities, production of hand sanitizers and liquid soaps to the bulk production of face masks and even the manufacturing of automated hand wash machines, you have awakened in us the spirit of excellence, enterprise and patriotism. Never in the history of our nation have we had such a selfless response to a national issue from young people.
Nigeria and Nigerians now know that the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Program of the scheme is not mere rhetoric and not a politically arranged portal for siphoning public funds but a viable medium through which young people can pick up skills that can enable them become self-employed and even hirers of labor.
Here in the FCT, through the unprecedented leadership of Hajiya Walida Siddique and under your transformational leadership, we have produced over twelve thousand branded face masks, over a 100littres of hand sanitizers and liquid soaps and we have reached out to different indigent communities around the FCT as our support to the nation in her fight against the coronavirus. All of these and many more, have been achieved because you gave the enabling environment and needed support and motivation.
What more can anyone ask for in a leader? As you mark your one year of influence, transformation and change in Office as the Director General of the NYSC, we wish you another year of greater achievements.
Happy One Year Anniversary Sir.
Dr. Vincent E. Chidera (FC/20A/0002)
