STATEMENT BY H.E OLUSEGUN OBASANJO ON THE JUDGEMENT
OF THE OSUN GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION PETITION TRIBUNAL
DUBAI – 23 March 2019

While I used to be in Dubai to attend the Global Education and Skills Forum assembly, I acquired the information of the judgment of the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal declaring Senator Ademola Adeleke, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the winner of the 2018 Governorship election within the state.

Let me take this chance to commend the tribunal for its braveness in nullifying what was clearly an illegality. This motion by the judicial officers, albeit a primary step within the authorized course of, provides renewed confidence within the judiciary at a time when there are coordinated efforts by some political leaders to undermine, if not destroy, it.

As I’ve repeatedly stated, the world is watching occasions in Nigeria with eager curiosity. What we do or don’t do proper in our electoral course of could have implications not only for Nigeria however for Africa and certainly the world. By correcting what was clearly a determined try to alter the need of the Osun people, the tribunal has saved Nigeria from nice embarrassment and began the method of saving and strengthening our democracy.

Let me additionally commend Sen. Adeleke for his statesmanship in going to court to hunt justice. This is the fitting and correct factor to do in any first rate society. Going to court should be inspired and never discouraged as some people are actually making an attempt to do.

While I’ve shunned commenting on the 2019 elections as a result of one of many events has gone to court, could I level out that those that name themselves our growth companions and mates and preach sacrificing justice on the altar of so-called stability are enemies of justice, democracy and Nigeria. We will proceed to maintain Nigeria in stability and unity on the altar of justice, fairness, equity, freedom, human rights and democracy. Stability can’t be efficiently constructed on injustice, corruption, inequity, and divided nation, and incompetence, nepotism and one-sidedness.

Nigeria will march ahead with or with out those that will need to feed us with weight-reduction plan of values and actions that aren’t acceptable in their very own international locations. Nigeria is of age. And if may go to court 3 times to hunt justice, even with out cheap trigger, any Nigerian who feels denied of justice should be at liberty to go to court.

Those who’ve conceived and are selling the narrative that if Atiku Abubakar continues to hunt authorized redress there might be violence, are evil minds searching for excuse to unleash violence on Nigerians. At no time in historical past has sustainable peace been constructed on theft, injustice, corruption and inequity. These retailers of chaos and violence shouldn’t have any place in any first rate society. And they need to know that no intimidation or prophesy of violence and doomsday will cow anyone. Nigeria belongs to all Nigerians. We will respect as mates those that consider that what is nice for his or her nation needs to be good for Nigeria. Yes, we’re Africans however we have now values which can be according to worldwide requirements. Court is a part of our democratic course of and it should be used when crucial if solely to attain justice, stability, unity and progress for our nation.
