Gunmen Attacked Travellers In Calabar
Thousands of travelers and locals living near the federal highway between Calabar and Uyo were caught by armed robbers and miscreants yesterday, Daily Trust report.
Following an accident involving three fuel-transporting trucks, the incident occurred. The accident occurred directly across from the Independent Power Plant.
One of the vehicles caught fire, causing traffic congestion on the highway.
Hoodlums, on the other hand, took advantage of the situation and attacked several of the stranded travelers, robbing them of their belongings.
Travelers and locals have been subjected to such attacks in the previous month, according to the Niger Delta Trust, making passage on the only access road to and from neighbouring states extremely unsafe.
Some of those trapped yesterday told our correspondent that they left Calabar as early as 7 a.m. for Uyo and spent more than four hours there.
They claimed that the situation was exacerbated by the bad status of the road, which had been neglected for a long time.
Aniefiok “We had to sleep on the spot,” Simeon, a businessman from Port Harcourt, added. We were attacked by hoodlums in the middle of the night, who came armed with knives and firearms and took all of our money and possessions.
“It was a horrible ordeal. On this road, people’s lives and property are at stake. This road has been in ruin for several years and serves as the only connection between states.”
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Cross River State has decried the road’s poor condition and urged the federal government to guarantee that contractors working on the project completed it on time in order to avoid the high number of accidents.
