trust you are staying safe. No need to write a long epistle before i can make my point. There’s an increasing rate of financial crimes especially during this lock down and it seems that many people are falling prey to them in a bid to have an alternative source of income.
Yesterday, a young lady received a message asking her to reset her password as federal government through ministry of finance was trying sent to some money to Nigerians and she gladly did hoping to receive some money but to her greatest surprise her account was hacked and she couldn’t have access to it and her little money was removed.
Please Note, Federal government or banks will not ask you to sent your BVN or reset your password before sending you money.
Here are some few steps to be safe from this fraudsters:
★ Stop playing online games especially here on Facebook because your information is being compromised. No need to find out what will happen to you in the future or what profession you were born for (if you understand what i mean) You are freely giving away your information.
★ Don’t click on any link sent on Facebook or whatsapp asking you to join a group for free giveaway. It might be a Trojan to access your information.
★ Don’t accept friend requests from unknown users. Don’t accept a second friend request from someone already in your list, it might be a trick to gain access to your account. Verify every request you receive before you accept. If possible, go through their profile and see their previous posts, friends and when they created the account to be sure of who you accept.
★ Disregard any call or sms asking for your financial information to help secure your account or to qualify for the government palliative. No agency or bank will ask for such information before according you any services.
★ Don’t engage on any transaction with anyone (even from your work or family) based on social media interactions. Ask them to call you (if possible do a face time) or meet you face to face and engage them seriously on the call if they are very far away from you. You might be dealing with a hacked account or someone under duress.
★ Never give out any token or pin sent to your phone number or email address on the grounds that it was mistakenly sent to you or that your number resembles their own. Ask them to request for the token again using their correct details. You are not under any obligation or law to release such information, because if you do, you might just have given away your financial access to someone else.
★ Secure your phone with a strong password or pin (not pattern) and avoid using same password for all your accounts, because once you lose access to one, you lose access to all. Secure your sim card with a pin especially the one linked to your financial institution, incase of theft or loss. They can access your account with just a ussd code. Delete all credit and debit alerts on your phone if they are already settled, it can do you more harm than good.
★ Lastly, be cautious of your online purchases during this period. There’s a lot of phishing websites flying about now in the name of online stores where you input your financial details to make purchases. If possible, only buy from the previous ones you’re registered with and have proven trustworthy.
Stay safe and secure.
