By Modlin Odu.
The People’s Democratic Party South West Zonal congress which held on Monday, 12th of April 2021 in Osogbo, the Oyo State capital ended in hugs and celebration by both opposing groups. For a fair play ground, the Party in her wisdom took the Venue from the conventional headquarters in Ibadan to Osogbo.
The delegates hailed the thoroughness of the electoral panel led by Gov. Ortom who was represented by the deputy Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Benson Abounu. The venue was robostly secured, accreditation of delegates was stiff and left no chance for impersonation and any form of misconduct.
Prior to the congress, Supporters of both groups have been at words war which had created the impression that all may not go so smoothly at the congress but the reverse became the case as both group leaders; Mr. Ayo Fayose and Gov. Seyi Makinde unanimously agreed that whichever way the election goes, for the good of the party, they would accept the outcome.
At the end of the election, of the 663 votes, Amb. Taofeek Arakpaja, Former Deputy Governor of Oyo State pulled a total of 333 votes, Mr. Eddy Olafeso got 320 votes and there were 10 voided votes. Reacting to the result, Fayose stated that although his candidate didn’t emerge, the electoral process was satisfactory. He congratulated Amb. Taofeek and winners of other positions and advised that supporters should stop fanning the flames of war between him and Makinde whom he described as “Father and Leader of Party” in the zone.
Sen. Prof Sandy Ojang Onor, a member of the electoral panel and Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District applauded delegates for their orderliness and congratulated leaders of the two groups for their simplicity and candour. He advised that “if the party must have a strong standing in the South West, it must recognize the strength of both groups as demonstrated by the close margin in the election”.
