The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in Cross River State might be plunged into deeper crisis as the state congress of the party scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, August 8, 2020 has been postponed.
Besides, members of PDP National Assembly from Cross River state are said to have concluded arrangements to defect to rival All Progressive Congress,APC, over the attempt to doctor the list of cleared candidates and delegates for the congress.
For over a year running, the NASS in collaboration with some founding fathers have been having a running battle over who controls the party structure ahead of 2023.
This, in turn, has factionalised the party into Ayade and Abuja fronts, thereby making the party susceptible to defeat in any election.
Investigations by The Southern Examiner revealed that the national Secretariat of the party postponed the congress for about one week even as no reason was given.
Sources at the party secretariat in Abuja further revealed that the postponement may not be unconnected with moves to reconcile the warring factions and bring peace in the party
It was learnt that Governor Ben Ayade, sensing that if the congress is allowed to hold as scheduled and using the authentic list approved by the National Working Committee, NWC, his candidates might not sell through.
Against this background, he was said to have embarked on intensive lobby to scuttle the congress and negotiate for peaceful resolution of the political imbroglio.
Another source revealed that the postponement may also be due to release of two different lists of cleared candidates and delegates for the congress.
While one of the lists contains three candidates including Venatius Ikem, Alphonsus Eba and Frank Adah to contest for the chairmanship seat in the state’s congress, another list has only Alphonsus Eba as the cleared candidate for the chairmanship tussle.
The two lists carry official stamp and signed by the party National Organising Secretary, Col Austin Akobundu (rted), with Hon (Olorogun) Talib Tebite as chairman of the five man panel.
But sensing a foul play and plot to allegedly sell the party to Governor Ayade, the NASS members have resolved in their last meeting in Abuja to defectf to APC in protest against the Governor’s high-handedness and undemocratic dispositions of the national party leadership.
Sources close to the meeting confided in our reporter that the NASS members may engage in further consultation with their constituents and supporters on the next line of action if no cogent reason was given for the postponement.
Some of the party members, who spoke off record, are worried at the last minute postponed and an attempt to armrest the NASS members by the Governor.
They warned that is high time party members are allowed to Express their wish and vote for leads them, adding that they are fed up with the antics of the Governor who is totally out take over the party structure.
As at the time of this report, our reporter authoritatively gathered that a consultative meeting is going on between the Governor and the members of the National Assembly at Peregrino Governemt House in Calabar to see how a.consensus can be reached at between the contending factions.
Earlier in the day, former governor, Sen Liyel Imoke, had called on all party members to unite and work as one family rather than engaging in infighting.
In a statement signed by him, he noted observed that ther has been seeming dispute and differences in the last few months following the last election and in the build up to the party congress.
According to him, it has been the tradition of the party to manage and resolve disputes, believing strongly that this one is no different from all the others.
