Walter Onnoghen Finally Speaks Out, Says Buhari Removed Him As CJN Because of Atiku

Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen (rtd), the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, broke his silence on Friday about why President Muhammad Buhari’s APC government unceremoniously removed him from office in 2019.

Prior to his dismissal, Onnoghen announced at a book launch he attended with his wife on Friday that there was a rumour from the Executive that he met with former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in preparation for the 2019 general elections.

“I was presented with no complaint prior to my suspension,” he said.

“It was mentioned that I had met with Atiku in Dubai. As I speak here today, I have never met Atiku one-on-one before. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I was even accused of releasing high-profile offenders, despite the fact that I had been a High Court Judge since 1978.

“I did not sit alone in the Supreme Court. We are seated in a panel. I was not given the opportunity to react to any of these rumors or outright allegations.

“Let me be clear: the office of the Chief Justice of Nigeria was not for Onnoghen, but for all Nigerians who had sworn to direct and defend the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution.

“To put it lightly, the time of my ordeal was the darkest in the Nigerian judiciary’s history.

“Judicial officers, as I’ve said before, must be brave. And I’d like to implore all serving judicial officers not to be intimidated by what happened to me at the hands of the government’s executive branch.”
