Another Catholic priest, Father John Gbakaan, was killed in the Niger State by gunmen accused of being bandits.

Father John Jatau, the priest in charge of St. Theresa Catholic Parish Madala, confirmed this on Sunday to Channels Television, claiming that his killers descended on him with machetes, hacking his body beyond recognition, and then binding his body to a bush tree.

He said Father Gbakaan had traveled to Makurdi in Benue state with his brother and another priest on Thursday, where he went to see his mother. But on his way back, around 9 pm, after Father Gbakaan had dropped Father Jatua at Suleja, he and his brother were attacked by gunmen along the Lambata-Lapai lane.

Father Gbakaan’s killing brings to two the number of Christian clerics killed recently in the Niger state after the revived banditry attacks.

In December 2020, gunmen were killed on his farm in the Chukuba village in Shiroro local government area by a clergy with the Evangelical Church of West Africa.
