In his address, Aliyu hinted that the long-standing zoning system should not be taken into account when choosing a new president, but rather the qualities of a great leader.

Credibility, competence, patriotism, nationalistic thought, and “love for one another, among other things, not regional, tribal, ethnical, or any other thing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the zoning system was introduced into the Nigerian political sphere to help with the smooth rotation of major political posts throughout the country. Fairness, peace, and an equitable allocation of resources were the goals of this strategy.

Even President Muhammadu Buhari is in office because of zoning, as the presidency was zoned to the North ahead of the 2015 general elections after former President Goodluck Jonathan was accused of defrauding the North when he ran in 2011 following the death of then-President Umaru Yar’Adua in office.

Aliyu also denounced the apparent criminalization of various ethnic groups and religions in Nigeria, claiming that if one ethnic group is labeled a threat, then every Nigerian is a threat to the country’s peace and security.

He explained, “The portion away from Korea separating to the South and North Korea to Western and Eastern Germany to Cameroon here where you have the English and French parts attempting to break away, you know what’s happening on so for anyone to be asking for war or thinking you can just separate is not easy” (sic).

“I believe in Nigeria, and I believe Nigeria will survive. There is a problem, whether we like it or not, and we need to talk about it. We are at odds with one another, and we have every right to be.

“The North has previously stated that it does not believe in separation, but as I stand here, I can assure you that if separation occurs tomorrow, the North will be prepared. We’re both ready, so let’s go our separate ways, and I’m saying this honestly. Northern Nigeria previously refused to hear anything about separation, but as I talk to you, the north is also ready to leave.

”When it comes to the presidency, what I’m going to say may be controversial, and you may disagree with it, but it’s the absolute truth, and I’m speaking the minds of northerners, and I have no apology to anyone in this hall for what I’m going to say, even though I respect the leaders, elders, and fathers who are here, and I do respect them, but I have no apology to anyone for what I’m going to say.

“When it comes to the rotational presidency, I believe we should be looking at credibility, competency, patriotism, patriotic thinking, affection for one another, and things like that to determine who becomes Nigeria’s president, not regional, tribal, ethnic, or other factors.

“Let us talk about the issue and come up with a solution. This is my viewpoint, and it is the viewpoint of northern Nigerians. To propel Nigeria forward, we must consider competence, credibility, patriotism, and love for the country.

“I agree that we should come to a round table and discuss Nigeria and the way forward for Nigeria. Call it a National Conference, call it restructuring, call it whatever you want. I agree that we should come to a round table and discuss Nigeria and the way forward for Nigeria. I agree that we are at odds, that there is an issue, and that it is best described as lopsided appointments; nevertheless, because I am not in government, I do not speak for the government; rather, I speak for the North.

“If Buhari is doing something wrong, Nigerians should alert him to the fact that he is doing something wrong. He is a Nigerian; he is a leader; he was chosen by all Nigerians, yet he is not considered as a threat to the country by any tribe or region.

“If one region, ethnicity, or religion poses a threat to this country, we are all posing a threat to Nigeria, and we are all posing a threat to Nigeria. Then let us get together to talk about the problem, find a solution, and move forward.”
