We Didn’t Say Schools Should Reopen January 18, Nigerian Government Makes U-Turns

On Monday, the Federal Government rejected the resumption of schools on January 18, saying an agreement was not reached.

Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education, explained that the Federal Government had reservations on 18 January with respect to the resumption of schools.

According to him, the Federal Government was against it, while the states decided to go ahead with the resumption of the school, but had to find a compromise as it does not regulate all the schools.

We sat down, looked at the numbers, and we made the decision not to open schools.

Unfortunately, since it’s supposed to be a joint decision, we have to say this, but you have to realize that the schools we’re talking about have just about 100 out of thousands of schools across the federal government.

The schools are under state authority, and just as the PTF was unanimous in arguing that schools should not be opened, states were unanimous in opening schools.

So, we have to negotiate and we will track what is going on on a regular basis as a PTF. Again, there may be a review,’ Adamu said.

Many of the schools in the southern part of the country have, meanwhile, reopened today.
