When he was announced as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2018, many Nigerians and party members were hopeful of better days ahead for the ruling party.
He had a good antecedent as the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and there were beliefs that he would bring that experience to bear in running the affairs of the party.
What party members expected of him was an APC where are members have equal rights, an APC where all voices are heard, an APC where the party constitution are duly followed, an APC where primary elections are free fair and credible, an APC where other organs of the party will be allowed to perform their responsibilities in accordance with the provisions of the APC constitution.
In all sense of sincerity, Oshiomhole promised to do more than the expectations of those looking up to him.
However, Oshiomhole got to office and he placed himself on top of the world. He saw himself above everybody. Just like a mini god, he wielded so much powers and in fact, it will not be out of place to say he was the most powerful party chairman in Nigeria since 1999. This is arguable, anyways.
In no time, he started attacking politicians here and there. He loves to talk, and anytime he stands behind the microphone, you can’t expect less. Little wonder, he has so many enemies, thereby digging his own grave.
Immediately after his inauguration as the National Chairman of the APC, his first target was former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
That day, Oshiomhole told Buhari to ask for the refund of the $16billionpurportedly spent on power in eight years from Obasanjo. He said the more dollars Obasanjo spent on power, the more darkness in Nigeria.
Aside from that, at every given opportunity, Oshiomhole would call out Obasanjo, especially if the former President said something against the government of President Buhari. This continued even when Obasanjo refused to exchange words with someone like Oshiomhole
Also addressing a rally in Calabar, Cross River state, Oshiomhole said Obasanjo should be punished for ceding Nigeria’s Bakassi Peninsula to Cameroon in quest for Nobel Prize for Peace. Nobody knows where Oshiomhole got that from.
But, when Oshiomhole was doin this, he didn’t know the end would come so soon.
When Oshiomhole became APC Chairman, it was like he has been targeting some people in Buhari’s cabinet. In July 2018, hethreatened to suspend Chris Ngige from the APC, while also promising to tell Buhari to remove him from his cabinet. What a powerful Chairman!
He said Senator Chris Ngige, would be suspended from the APC, if he fails to surrender to orders of the party.
The bone of contention was when he directed Ngige to inaugurate governing councils of boards in the ministry. “Is he Buhari?” Many asked
But Ngige said three of the four boards had been inaugurated and that the delay in the inauguration of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Funds, NSITF governing council was due to the alleged fraud perpetrated by the former board.
Oshiomhole was not satisfied with that explanation as he threatened to deal with Ngige. But Ngige told him pointblank that he was not afraid of suspension.
Look at it today, the Oshiomhole that was planning to suspend Ngige was suspended by an ordinary ward chairman. What a world!
When Oshiomhole and Saraki went up in arms with each other, it was cataclysmic. At a point, people were asking whether the duo have been enemies from heaven.
Remember that Saraki left the APC when he felt he had overstayed his welcome in the party.
As the Senate President then, Oshiomhole said Saraki must be impeached, but Saraki succeeded in completing his tenure as the Senate President.
He recontested but he could not return to the Senate. Then, Oshiomhole said Saraki’s electoral loss was his greatest achievement. He said he had been buried politically.
The question now is, can we say Oshiomhole has been buried politically too? Time will tell.
After the 2019 general elections, Dino Melaye from Kogi West, won and returned to the Senate. Don’t forget he was one of the Senators that defected with Saraki to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
But, his APC rival, Smart Adeyemi went to the election petition tribunal and the victory of Melaye was nullified for a rerun election.
Speaking before the election, Oshiomhole, boasted that Melaye will join the other 15 Senators that rebelled against the APC, saying that Nigerians punished the Bukola Saraki-led rebels by retiring them.
Just like he predicted, Dino Melaye lost the rerun election and Smart Adeyemi took his position.
If you see Dino Melaye mocking Oshiomhole after the dissolution of the National Working Committee, that’s the reason.
As sitting governors, Oshiomhole engaged in serious fights with Senator Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State and Senator Rochas Okorocha of Imo State.
At a point, he suspended them from the APC, because the duo were not pleased with how he conducted the governorship primary elections in their states.
How come Oshiomhole was suspended and later retired by the dissolution of his National Working Committee by the National Executive Committee, headed yesterday by President Muhammadu Buhari.
There is a lesson here: Pride goes before a fall. Never see yourself as being above others, no matter the position.
God gave Oshiomhole many opportunities to repent, but he misused those opportunities, thinking the support of Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be sufficient for him all the time.
He came, he saw, but he allowed himself to be conquered instead of being a conqueror.
By now, the above-mentioned politicians will be smiling, at least, the loquacious former National Chairman has been relegated to the background.
