Why We Stopped Negotiating With Bandits, Kidnappers — Nigerian Government
The Minister of State for Education, Chief Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has opened up on the reasons why the Federal Government abandoned the option of negotiations with kidnappers of students.
Nwajiuba spoke Wednesday while responding to questions from State House reporters after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said the bandits used funds raised from ransoms to rearm themselves, thereby escalating insecurity in the country.
The minister reacted when asked to speak on what the government was doing over the video that went viral where some of the kidnapped students in Kaduna State were being tortured by kidnappers.
He said “We are constrained to stop negotiations with bandits because we’ve seen that every time they get any payment, it leads to further escalation, because they rearm and they go back.”
Nwajiuba reassured Nigerians that efforts were being made to rescue the children.
