Wike Blows Hot, Bans Igbo Group Meeting In Rivers State

The Rivers State Government has halted a scheduled meeting of some Igbo residents in the Oyigbo Local Government Region, citing concerns that such a gathering could rekindle local unrest.

On Saturday, April 10, 2021, a party known as the United Igbo Community will hold a meeting in Oyigbo.

The government directed security agencies “to ensure that the said meeting does not take place to avoid a breakdown of law and order in the area,” according to a statement signed by the commissioner for information and communications, Paulinus Nsirim.

Though the government has not stated any security concerns, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a proscribed party that the police claims is responsible for attacks on police officers and facilities in the region shortly after the #EndSARS protest in October 2020, has a stronghold in Oyigbo local government area, which shares a border with Abia state.

The attacks prompted a military operation that resulted in the deaths of soldiers and civilians.

Apart from the unstable existence of Oyigbo in the aftermath of the October incident, the Igbo group meeting comes at a time when the country is dealing with attacks on police formations in Imo, a south-east state that shares a border with Rivers.
